Thread: 13.1 working with ethernet over USB?

  1. #1

Default 13.1 working with ethernet over USB?

will OS 13.1 be able to establish a network connection on a Laptop whose LAN connection only works via a USB-ethernet adapter?

As long as the device is supported as an ethernet device you should be fine.
What network interfaces are present when you do the following?
    Code:
    /sbin/ifconfig
There should be a 'usb0' interface present or similar. (You may need to load the 'usbnet' driver first.)

There will be some additional configuration work depending whether you use network manager or ifup to manage the network. I can only point you at a guide such as this

It probably depends on the adapter. You might provide information about
the adapter you have or the adapter you're thinking of purchasing, and
see if anyone's able to tell you if it works or not.

Certainly some USB-based Ethernet adapters work, because I have openSUSE
13.1 running on a Raspberry Pi, which uses an Ethernet adapter internally
connected to the USB bus. It's also possible that one of my desktop
machines is set up that way as well.

    thanks for the answers.
I don't have the devices, so I can't post details.

my reason for asking was that I consider buying a Lenovo Yoga 11S that doesn't have built-in ethernet.
since I had several times severe problems with OS installations on a laptop that I could only sort out via ethernet as wlan was not working, that point concerns me.

From a quick google, I found one user reporting that the J5create (JUE130) device is supported

    http://askubuntu.com/questions/36796...ovo-yoga-2-pro

The D-Link DUB-E100 is reported as supported (by the asix kenrel driver). The asix driver supports a number of chipsets
