Gnome Terminal renders it's own Box Drawing and Block Elements characters

I’ve created a fixed-width character font that includes the Box Drawing and Block Elements (0x2500–0x259F) characters, and set it as my font on the Gnome Terminal, however it is not using those characters, instead it renders it’s own. (It’s not a bad idea, but it is thicker what I’ve designed, it is unnecessary for my font, and generally kills some of it’s retro feeling.)
On the most recent Ubuntu (not trying to compare the distributions) it uses the font’s characters. I believe this was the behaviour in the 3rd openSuse version before 13.1 or something. I have openSUSE 13.1 with Gnome 3.

How can I make Gnome Terminal not to draw it’s own interpretation of these character range, but use the characters from the font? I don’t mind if it draws them whenever it is not available though.
