Thread: I need an application recommendation

  1. #1

Default I need an application recommendation

    opensuse 12.3
    KDE 4.10.5

My wife, whose PC is also running opensue 12.3, has a Nook and an Android phone with a jillion photos on it.
She has asked me to help her clean them up, get them organized into 4 folders, etc. For now, they reside on my PC.

A Cloud solution seems ideal to me but when I explained that she would need an internet connection in order to be able to access them, she resisted.
Then it came to me that if I were to provide a local file sharing solution, that might be more acceptable.

So, what app would you recommend that I would host (I have a lot more disk space) ?
She would need to be able to connect to it via her Nook HD+. Her PC connects now sorta, via CUPS for printing.

    Interesting problem.

Probably the first Q should be to review your requirements...
Is there really a reason why you would want serve those images from a network share besides simply more disk space?

If storage is the only issue, I'd instead suggest buying SDcards for each device (The Nook HD+ supports SDcards, "better" Android phones also use SDcards).

Otherwise, depending on your technical expertise it is possible to configure network shares but I don't know of any client-side tools I'd consider "user friendly" -- There are plenty of client apps that support FTP, SMB and HTTP connections to network shares but I wouldn't consider any of them "Consumer" user friendly.

Remember also that tablets and phones are mobile devices that can be taken outside the range of your home network. Unless you intend to serve those files both internally and to the Internet, your LAN network shares won't be accessible from remote locations.

    IMO,

    A web page?

With apache server. It can be a full fledged page, or simply a file list of photo files. Maybe there
is some application that generates an appropriate html file with clickable small thumbnails (hand
    creating it is boring).

Konqueror can do this. When standing in a directory with pictures there is in the Tools menu an item Create Image Gallery.

Just did a check in the Google Store, no konqueror.
Didn't check the B&N store, but I doubt their limited apps would contain anything not in the Play Store (esp an app not specific to B&N services).

Interesting... I'll have to check that.

    Yes, the ubiquitous web.
If you know how to code mobile web pages... It's actually not that difficult to do (just an understanding of HTML5, choose a mobile framework and insert gallery code).
But, I was a bit reluctant to start someone down the path of code development unless I knew that was where the person wanted to go...

Run owncloud on your machine, give her an account, move the pictures to her owncloud user folder. She can than use the Nook's browser (it has one, hasn't it) + your machine's IP/owncloud to view the pics. In fact you could use almost any CMS+nice gallery. Running a webserver locally won't hurt your machine's performance. A bit of work to be done on your machine, but very doable. A point is that she'd have to use the local network, which I presume is connected to the internet. But I guess she means she doesn't want store stuff on the web.

btsync. I use it on my HD Plus and my Android phone - it works entirely
    locally.

I was not thinking of any web development, that can be complex. I was thinking of something more or
less automatic. Setting up Apache to simply give you access to the files in a directory is quite
simple. I was not thinking of Internet, either: only local network.

I actually use Apache to give access to friends to download things from my desktop computer, I find
it easier than giving them access over samba. And safer.
