Thread: No HDMI video output on Panasonic Viera

Default No HDMI video output on Panasonic Viera

    Hi,

I've just finished building a HTPC (Gigabyte GA-F2A88XM-D3H + integrated AMD HD7000). Based on openSUSE 12.3.
The problem is I can't get any video output on my Panasonic Viera HD tv. The tv remains completely black.

    What does work?

    1. My laptop displays fine on the TV (same HDMI cable). Right from the SUSE boot loader screen and onwards.
    2. The HTPC displays fine on a HP LP2475w computer screen (again same HDMI cable)

According to Xorg.0.log the TV reports some EDID info:

    Code:
[ 7.808] (II) VESA(0): EDID vendor "MEI", prod id 41622
[ 7.808] (II) VESA(0): Using EDID range info for horizontal sync
[ 7.808] (II) VESA(0): Using EDID range info for vertical refresh
[ 7.808] (II) VESA(0): Printing DDC gathered Modelines:
    [ 7.808] (II) VESA(0): Modeline "1920x1080"x0.0 148.50 1920 2448 2492 2640 1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync (56.2 kHz eP)
    [ 7.808] (II) VESA(0): Modeline "1920x1080"x0.0 148.50 1920 2008 2052 2200 1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync (67.5 kHz e)
The TV reports 1080p/50Hz as incoming signal. But the TV screen remains completely black.
The Panasonic user guide has the following comments on computer input (for what it's worth):

    Code:
     640 x 480 x 60 Hz, HFreq = 31,47 KHz, VFreq = 60 Hz
    1280 x 720 x 60 Hz, HFreq = 45,00 KHz, VFreq = 60 Hz
    1920 x 1080 x 60 Hz, HFreq = 67,50 KHz, VFreq = 60 Hz
So the HTPC seems fine and the TV seems also ok. But the specific combo of HTPC > TV doesn't work.
Can anyone offer a suggestion on how to get this combo to work?
    Any help apprecated!

The TV reports 1080p/50Hz as incoming signal.
Maybe you should get your output to 60 Hz as that is what the Panasonic's user guide requires?
    Code:
      640 x 480 x 60 Hz, HFreq = 31,47 KHz, VFreq = 60 Hz
    1280 x 720 x 60 Hz, HFreq = 45,00 KHz, VFreq = 60 Hz
    1920 x 1080 x 60 Hz, HFreq = 67,50 KHz, VFreq = 60 Hz
    Can't help you there, though.
Normally, there should be some frontend like "nvidia-settings" or something. To get more help, maybe should post what driver and WM you are using.

    Good luck!

    Excellent suggestion!

According to YasT the htpc uses xorg-x11-driver-video-nouveau-1.0.6-2.1.1.
But I'm not sure it's used: lsmod has no occurences. Neither any evidence in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    WM = KDE.

    Hi koospol,

I am not so familiar with the nouveau driver. I usually use the proprietary driver. I can't check it well, my laptop top is running a simple intel graphics and my machine with the nvidia card is (so far...) upstairs, switched off. It is still on 11.2, anyway. What I would try now is:
KDE provides a widget called "krandrtray". After starting it you should find an icon in the system tray. With krandrtray you should be able to set resolution and frequency, at least on my laptop I can.
If that doesn't help, you may try and install the proprietory driver from the nvidia repo. There should also be a program available like "nvidia-settings" what does the same as krandrtray plus some more tweaking etc.

    Have a lot of fun!

Default [SOLVED] Re: No HDMI video output on Panasonic Viera

Thanks for the suggestion, Kasi. You got me definitely in the right direction. The cpu (amd a6-6400k) has a Radeon HD8470D APU. Sufficiently new that it's only supported by the proprietary driver from AMD (AMD landing page and AMD driver page) With AMD's driver I was succesful in displaying my KDE session on the TV . I'm not having the boot sequence and/or splash screen(s), but I'll consider that a luxury problem. Many thanks again for your suggestions.

    Glad I could help.
Now that you repeated you have an AMD i.e. ATI Radeon APU it is clear - even to me - that the nouveau driver wasn't in use. It is a pure nvidia driver (open source). That let me think about the nvidia drivers. So I am even more glad that I have simple overlooked you mention "AMD HD 7000". I keep forgetting that AMD may well be the graphic card / processor, not just a CPU. With ATI in the title I might never have dared reply. So it is true, again: Sometimes, ignorance is bliss!
