Thread: Installing KDE alongside Gnome 3

Default Installing KDE alongside Gnome 3

Is there terminal code that will install the full KDE desktop that is found in OpenSuse 13.1 which will give the same KDE desktop as found in the new version? I have googled this issue, but am scared of installing an outdated version of KDE.

    Thanks for any advice!

And which openSUSE version are you using?
If it's not 13.1, you would have to add the KDE 4.11 repos to your system first:
    SDB:KDE repositories - openSUSE

Thanks for the reply. I have a new install of OpenSuse13.1 (64 bit) which I installed initially using Gnome 3, which is ok, but I would like to try KDE as the new OpenSuse version is getting rave reviews! How would I do that and include the full package such as extra wallpapers etc. ?

    Thanks again

Then once that is all installed
    Go to Yast > etc/sysconfig editor > Desktop > Display Manager https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...playM_12.3.png
    and also Window Manager https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...ndowM_12.3.png

Set as seen above for kde
    Apply

Reboot and at the login screen be sure to select kde as the session before entering your password (Note: You need auto login off to do this!)

You don't actually _have_ to change the default display and window manager.
And you shouldn't if you still want to use GNOME, since some of its stuff depends on GDM running (screen lock f.e.).
Just selecting "KDE Plasma Desktop" in GNOME's Login Screen should be enough. I can't give you a screen shot where you would do that, but there should be a similar menu somewhere.

In GNOME 3.10 too there is a "gear" icon which will allows one to switch
    sessions/desktops

    openSUSE 13.1 (Bottle) (x86_64) 64-bit
