Thread: multiple desktops?

  1. #1

    Question multiple desktops?

Just was wondering if OpenSuse could be configured to run gnome, kde, lxde and xfce desktops and choose them from login. I did this once in Fedora, but havent found any how tos yet. Thanks in advance.

When you have installed them (YaST > Software > Software Management, choose Patterns from the View menu and then select those you want from the list), you can indeed choose between them from your login screen. Even now some choices are available (mostly as a fallback when you have ppoblems with your normaly used DE.

This works for all versions of openSUSE. But please next time you ask something, mention which version you use. Asking for this basic piece of imformation will often delay a solution coming forward.

But of course you have to turn off Auto-login to get to the login screen in the first place. (though logging out will bring you there as well)

Edit /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager, search for the line containing "DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN=" and change it to:
    Code:
    DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN=""

Of course you can. I have them all.

Howtos? What for? just install whatever you want.

I recall with one version of openSUSE and one login manager, it wasn't
at all obvious how to choose the type of session. I don't remember what
version or what desktop, but perhaps the OP is having a similar difficulty.

Well... maybe. That would be xdm, I think. That is not installed by
default, perhaps on a minimal X install.

On a normal install, it is very simple. You just install the desired
desktop, and choose it on login. If it doesn't work, then ask :-)

Installing the desktop of choice is now much easier than it was, because
you just choose the gnome, xfce, kde patterns.

It wasn't installing the desktop that was the problem. It was finding
the appropriate control in the interface when you were logging in. It
was displayed as some sort of logo or something in an unexpected place
instead of a recognizable button. So "choose it on login" was impossible
until somebody explained where the control was.

This is the only thing we know about the problem from the OP:

And he never came back to comment/answer/ask further questions about the several reactions. Thus we do not know which version of openSUSE he uses, what DE he has now active, what login screen (kdm, gdm,...) he sees.

Now I am a bit confused how you came to your conclusions. I probably missed something.

I didn't come to any conclusion. I simply pointed out that there was
another possible explanation for the OP's description.

Like you, I am surprised that the OP hasn't come back and supplied the
    obviously missing information.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, we are on the same line then.
