Thread: Gnome freezes when alternating between root- and normal-privilege windows

Default Gnome freezes when alternating between root- and normal-privilege windows

Not sure if this is the correct place to go, but I have continual problems with my Gnome desktop freezing when I am doing maintenance work using, for example, gedit started with gnomesu to get root privileges.

OpenSuse 12.3, default Gnome 3 desktop. If I am working logged in as root all is well, but if I am logged in as me and need to do something as root (using a terminal and gnomesu), as soon as I click on a window other than the 'root' app, Gnome freezes. The mouse pointer moves, but nothing responds to clicks. I have to force the PC to do a 'hard' power down (ie switch it off at the mains), and restart in order to recover.

I have previously had this when I su'd in a terminal, then used gnomesu to start an app (I know, I know, why did I do that? But it surely shouldn't do any harm).

Is this a bug in Gnome? I haven't found anything in Bugzilla. it seems quite consistent. The consequence is that if I want to anything as root, I have to switch users to log in to Gnome as root, which I don't like doing for obvious reasons.

    Can anyone offer a solution?

    TIA

Except that logging into the GUI is very strongly not recommended because
it can cause file permissions issues for normal users.

*Always* use gnomesu (or similar) to elevate privileges rather than
logging in as root in the DE.

You might try opening a terminal and run 'top' or 'htop' (the latter
might need to be installed) to see if there's anything that's spiking the
CPU when you do this. Another thing to look at is if anything is
recorded in /var/log/messages at the time one of these hangs happens.

I would suggest editing using vi/vim instead of gedit as this bug seems
to affect applications which are GUI based.typing vi takes me to vimon
openSUSE and it does support mouse and cursor based navigation. The last
thing i read about this says that it is a systemd issue.

If you don't like vi (I don't), you have alternatives. There is the
classic and powerful emacs. Then there is the simple mcedit (need to
install 'mc'), or joe (installed by default). joe has different call
names: for instance, if you call "jstar", then the interface is
word-star alike (aka Borland IDE editor). There even more terminal
    editors: pico (like Alpine), nano...

My reply of last evening seems to have ogne AWOL (it was made before 1900 UTC, promise!)

I agree that I should not log in to the GUI as root - but this problem is forcing me to do so, to aovid screen freezes when I need elevated privileges. I'll try your suggestions tonight.

According to upstream (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=753882 ) it
    can't be fixed..
    Oh dear.

    Oh dear.
Well, at least both bug reports are still ASSIGNED and not CLOSED, so there's still hope.

    And there's a workaround in https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=814626#c6 :
    Code:
    su
    unset XDG_RUNTIME_DIR
    gedit
You could put that into a shell script or create an alias to make it easier to use.

su - does the job .

    You're right of course.
Sorry, I just copy/pasted that from the bugreport without looking (or thinking... ).
