    That's a safety feature designed to prevent R/W access when the windows file-system is in a hibernated state.

    Don't mount the XP partition if you plan to hibernate it. Or mount it read only. Hibernation leaves the Windows file system in a unknown state Writing to Windows like that can cause corruption to the Windows file system.

    Making a large jump in versions is almost always a problem since the upgrade does not update config files and programs may not deal with very old config correctly. I always recommend a new install if you are moving more then a single version. Yes it can be done but you need pretty good knowledge on how thing work in Linux
