Thread: Kwrite only starts from Terminal

  1. #1

Default Kwrite only starts from Terminal

I am running into an issue where I can on open up kate and kwrite through the konsole terminal. If I try to open it from my launcher or open files, I get this error.

    Code:
A KDE text-editor component could not be found.
    Please check your KDE installation.
I've already tried re-installing the programs and their dependencies.

    Thanks for the help

Reboot -- or did you do that already?

If you create a new user and try there, does it work?

    Can we see your repos
    Code:
    zypper lr -d
    Leap 15_KDE

Well, I find it strange that it would work when run from Konsole and not from the menu.
Can you run other KDE programs from the menu?

Have those packages the exact same version?
    Code:
    rpm -q kwrite libktexteditor
    Try to run:
    Code:
    kbuildsycoca --noincremental
But if it doesn't work for a new user, this likely won't help either.

Is there anything interesting in ~/.xsession-errors after unsuccessfully trying to run kwrite?

    Code:
    kwrite-4.11.1-1.1.x86_64
    libktexteditor-4.11.1-1.1.x86_64
    Packages are the same

    Code:
    kbuildsycoca --noincremental
If 'kbuildsycoca' is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this:
        cnf kbuildsycoca
Did I run it correctly or is this the wrong command?

also how do I access .xsession-errors?

It is just a text file in your home the period indicates it is a hidden file so if looking in a GUI turn show hidden on.

    from a Knosole

    kedit ~/.xsession-errors

    should do it

    Good.
But why 4.11.1? The current version is 4.11.2.
And according to your repos you should have 4.10.5!

Maybe there is a mixture of different versions in your KDE packages?
Try to run "sudo zypper dup" to bring back all your packages to the 12.3 versions.

Sorry, that was a typo. It should have been "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental". (kbuildsycoca is the KDE3 version)

There is no kedit in KDE4.
But "kwrite ~/.xsession-errors" should do, provided you can start kwrite from Konsole.
    Or "cat ~/.xsession-errors".
Or upload the file to SUSE Paste and post a link.

I ran zypper dub and it works fine now, Thanks!

I am curious though to why I could still run it from the terminal.

The menu entry did not call correctly the command to start it. Somehow
    it was broken.
