Thread: Konsole hangs when opening a new window.

  1. #1

Default Konsole hangs when opening a new window.

    Hi,

I just updated my openSUSE laptop and I noticed that, after a while, I cannot open new terminals either with Yakuake or Konsole. Both just hang forever. I also notice that some of my python scripts that return the following error:

    "OSError: out of pty devices"

    However the max pty is:
    > cat /proc/sys/kernel/pty/max
    4096

    and the current running:
    > cat /proc/sys/kernel/pty/nr
    4

I do not understand what is going on. Here is some of my system info:

    > cat /etc/SuSE-release
    openSUSE 12.3 (x86_64)
    VERSION = 12.3
    CODENAME = Dartmouth
    KDE Version: 4.10.5 "release 1:

    Thanks,

    -Filipe

ps: I just tried to open a Konsole windows from a previously open Konsole and here is the error message:

    konsole(26076)/kdecore (KPty/K3Process) KPty:pen: Can't open a pseudo teletype
konsole(26076) Konsole:ty::flowControlEnabled: Unable to get flow control status, terminal not connected.

Try Ctrl-Alt-F1 and see if that gets a terminal session. Use Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back. I would like to see these terminal commands posted here:

    Code:
    df

    free

    cat /etc/fstab

Here are the results from those commands:

The problem does not happen right away, sometimes it takes a while (after I opened a few terminals) to happen. However, when it did happened I was able to "Ctrl-Alt-F1" and open a new terminal session without any problem.

I did read about this bug:

    https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=128154

but I do not think it is related to my problem since it is an old bug.

    Thanks again,

In the future, lets use code # tags for such terminal output. Once the format is lost, it does not return though.

Off hand, your /home partition is running out of room and you are starting to use swap space which means you are running out of memory. I would delete some personnel files from /home reboot and post the same results again, in a code # tag.

Thanks, here are the result of same commands:

I did freed some space, but the weird things is that since I used the CTRL+ALT+F1, the problem stopped. Even before deleting some files.

    Code:
    > free

    Thanks again for the help.

Spoke too soon, the problem persists, it just took longer to manifest itself. I'm not sure what is triggering it, but after it happens for the first time it keeps happening "faster" after a reboot.

For a normal user the system will stop allocating disk space when it gets about 90% full. You are there.

Is there a way to configure that limit? I have been at it for months, but the problem just start last week...

I'll try to free more space to see what happens.

    Thanks,

    -Filipe.

When you look at some values, they are padded for root and you may not be there yet as you think. No matter what, its time to remove something from /home.

I freed more space and so far so good. What puzzles me is that I have being on the "limit" with my disc for a while, but the problem just manifest itself recently. Anyways, freeing space was something I had to.

    Thanks for all the help.
