    Default Experiences with 3.11 kernel

Have anyone tried installing and running Opensuse 12.3 with the 3.11 stable kernel?

That is the 3.11 linux kernel from the opensuse repository: Index of /repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard/x86_64

I was thinking of trying this kernel version considering openSUSE 12.3 is still running the old 3.7 kernel.

I have been using it since it came out and have done the couple of updates that have appeared. If you're using the proprietary nVidia driver you'll have to jump through some hoops to make it work, but otherwise I've had no problems with it (openSUSE 12.3 x64).

What kind of hoops? I am using the NVidia driver from ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/12.3/. These have always worked fine when I have updated the kernel from repository. Perhaps there is problem if you install nvidia manually.

The driver from that repo won't work. You'll have to manually install, and to patch the driver somewhere inbetween. That's it in short.
Think, what should a newer kernel bring? What do you expect from it?

if you use nvidia and want to compile 325.15 you need to patch it with this

    http://pastebin.com/qV30u23p

this is if you do it manually.

but if you do it from ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/12.3/ i don't have an idea if you will succeed or not.

just in case i hope you change to multiversion kernel from here

openSUSE 12.3: Chapter 12. Installing Multiple Kernel Versions

although kernel 3.11.1 most of the chances that it will be ok but don't take this risk .

For what it is worth, kernel 3.11.0/1 have a problem with openSUSE 12.3 and the nVIDIA video chipset in a GT 620 (GF119) video card and which provides no screen display. Other nVIDIA chipsets have not had such a problem with kernel 3.11 for me.

I was thinking perhaps 3.11 would give better performance for me than the 3.7. I know there has been changes in XFS in the kernel.

I think I will try the multiversion approach. If the kernel fails I can always boot back into the old kernel.

There's a long thread on 3.11 in the Pre-release/Beta forum. You might give that a read.

Awhile back I ran the 3.11 kernel for awhile.

I found at that time that the core was fairly stable (am running the Nouveau driver for nVidia chipsets).
But, that's all it was, a core. Numerous kernel modules don't/didn't exist like support for ZFS, autofs, etc.

So, a kernel can be "stable" but not yet full-featured if you're doing anything that's not very mainstream.
