Thread: KDE system update notification disappears shortly after login

Default KDE system update notification disappears shortly after login

Hi, I'm using opensuse 12.3, not sure what version of KDE it is but it's whatever comes with 12.3

A minor annoyance, but I've found that after login when I get software update notifications on the taskbar,
if I don't click on it within say a minute the notification disappears until I next login.

I find this annoying if I don't want to install the updates immediately, e.g. I want to get on and actually
use my computer rather than sit around for them to install.

Is there some setting where you can get the notification to persist?

I've had a look in the KDE system settings panel and can't see anything there,
apart from getting the taskbar to flash which I don't really want.

    Thanks

When a notification disappears, a small number (meaning the count of unread notifications) should appear instead in the system tray.
If you click on that number, the notifications should popup again.
    Don't you get that?

You should see a number added to the bar show the notification. The number should show until you close that notification.

Also if you want to update later you can do a zypper up from a konsole as root

I've been using the apper-plasmoid for quite a while now, and I must say, though grown up old-school, I like it very much. It respects my repos, doesn't do anything until I tell it to. Maybe a good alternative for you?

I do get persistent numbers for other notifications, such as file copying or mounting a USB stick,
but not for the update messages.

I have the same issue on my other PC with 12.3 on it.

I assumed this was how the default installation behaved, but I take it you guys
    don't have the same problem?

Thanks for the zypper heads up, I know there are many ways to skin a cat,
but it would be nice if I could just click on the taskbar icon to fire up the updater,
in the same way that Windows does.

Well I don't know really. I generally will install as soon as I see the notification. In cases I don't I simply will run zypper to to the update and a time of my choosing.

The apper-plasmoid does just that, but better:
    - Refreshes the repos ( shortly after login ) automatically
    - Lists available updates
    - These can be Reviewed
    - These can be Installed
    - Shows "System is up to date" when nothing available.

Well, in that case you should install the package "apper-plasmoid" as Knurpht already mentioned.
You can enable that then in the system tray settings (right-click on that green up-arrow and choose "System Tray Settings", it's called "Softwareaktualisierung" in my screenshot, should be "Software Updater" or similar in english):

You should then get the updater symbol in the system tray on which you can click:
