Thread: Dolphin SFTP problems

    Unhappy Dolphin SFTP problems

I have the problem that Dolphin does not connect to a remote SSH host with the SFTP protocol.

I'm using openSUSE 12.3 with KDE 4.10.5. I have this issue for years as I can remember with every openSUSE.
I did use fish for an replacement, but I fear that fish is not as fast when it comes to transfering files as sftp.

    The facts

    • I can SSH (from console) in the remote machine without any problem
    • I can also use SFTP and SCP from the console
    • I can use FISH in Dolphin to connect to the remote machine
    • I cannot use SFTP in Dolphin. When I try to create a network drive, select sftp, enter all details (the detaiils are correct, I quadruple-checked it), click on "Save & Connect" I immediately get a message like "Connection to server could not be established. Please check you details and try again."
    • I removed the known_hosts file... no difference.
    • SFTP subsystem is enabled on all remote machines.

I tried to connect to many different machines using Dolphin, it fails every time with SFTP.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Hi,

I've seen this before, will have a dive in the forums. But ... could you create a new user, login as that user and report if things work for that user?
Plus, post the output of the command below, between CODE tags (the # in the editor)

    Ooops. Here's the command:

    Code:
    zypper lr -d
BTW Bjoern, was 12.3 a clean install ? Have you been using the same /home?

I just tried that and surprisingly the connection can be established with SFTP!
But back to my standard user, it still refuses to work.

    Code:
    $ zypper lr -d

Yes, 12.3 was a new and clean install. Not updated from an earlier version.

Have you been using the same /home?
Hmm that is a good question. I created a new /home but I copied some data from my old home directory over to the new one. That could have included some some KDE-related files. Unfortunately I cannot remember which folders I copied exactly.

OK, so now we know it's in your homedir.

What happens if you close Dolphin, open a terminal window and do
    Code:
    mv ~/.ssh ~/.ssh06092013
, then restart Dolphin and try to make a connection?

Hi Knurpht, I did that and I was able to connect to the remote machine.

Thanks to your great help I was able to track it to the following: I have two certificates in my .ssh folder: id_rsa and an old id_dsa I use to connect to an old legacy machine. I copied over the id_rsa to my new .ssh folder and it still worked. But when I copied the id_dsa file, the problem that I cannot connect with SFTP suddenly comes back. So the problem seems to be related to the old certificate in some way.

I will move the old certificate to another place since I only need it only very seldom.

    Thanks a bunch!!
