is it possible to change the startup icon(the big chameleon) to this one? the 12.3 version has a small icon (only the chameleon’s head)

Right click it, and you should be able to edit the preferences, incl. icon, of the kicker. Mind this is KDE3, if this was the stock KDE, consider moving to a much newer openSUSE release.
Right-click on the start button icon / select application launcher settings / click on the Icon / then selct which icon picture you prefer
