Panel on Gnome

I am running the latest Suse, and would like to change the Panel but apparently the right click menu on the panel is disabled.

Where does one go to change the Panel?

Correct, this is by design assuming your running openSUSE 12.3?

You can run gnome-shell fallback mode and use extensions to enhance the desktop?
https://extensions.gnome.org/

Else there is the option to install gnome-shell 3.8.4 via the online repository and run gnome-shell-classic which has a lot of the extensions already configured.

If I run fallback mode, don’t I lose some form of a functionality - hence the “fall back”?

Also, what is the difference in Gnome Shell as I have it and the “classic” version?

And, why on earth did they disable the option/menu for the Panel?

You would need to look at the GNOME desktop Mailing List archives for all the hows and whys…

Yes it is, but the newer release of GNOME shell 3.8.4 and running classic is an improvement, have a read of this blog?

if you run fall back you lose desktop effects. Other than that there is
no loss of “functionality”.

Exploring extensions would help you add new panels, move status icons to
the top,remove your user name from panel,
add task bar,add traditional gnome “main menu”,change top panel
transparent,speed up desktop animation etc.
