Thread: Thunderbird 17.0.8-19.1-i586 update -> extreemly slow, very unresponsive

Default Thunderbird 17.0.8-19.1-i586 update -> extreemly slow, very unresponsive

Yesterday, there was a minor update from MozillaThunderbird 17.0.8-18.1-i586 to 17.0.8-19.1-i586.

This however caused Thunderbird to be very slow and unresponsive.
I tried several restarts of TB as well as reboots of openSUSE 12.3 (fully patched).
Since some releases back, TB became slower. Espacially taking long to start. But with this latest minor update, it is barely to work with.

    Any advice / help?

    Thanks in advance.

Did you try to downgrade to previous version using YaST ?
    Also try compacting your folders

as far as i can see the latest Thunderbird distributed by the
openSUSE update repo for 12.3 is 17.0.7, so i wonder if you are
    downloading direct from Mozilla?

hmmm...17.0.8 _is_ in the factory repo so you might get some of the
software testers there interested in helping you submit a bug to the
    (openSUSE) unreleased version..

but, i don't think there are a lot of folks in this forum running
factory or newer versions to try to help you.

you might click the triangular shaped icon at the bottom of this post
and 'report' you want the thread moved to the correct (pre-release)
    forum...[please do not double post]

Would have tried that first. But:
Well, the previous version (17.0.8-18.1) is not in the repository anymore.

Yep. Tried that too. Actually do that regularly.
    Also tried the repair.

    Thanks anyhow.

No, not from Mozilla direct, but from the OBS (//download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_12.3/).

As you can see above (link in brackets), it is the stable for openSUSE 12.3 and not factory version.
Hence, the posting belongs (to my knowledge) into this forum.

The really stable one is in the plain 'oss' repo.

Do you have indexing active? You might remove the indexing package - I
can't remember the exact name now.

I have nepomuk running. And within TB I have Gloda Indexing running as well.
However, it was fine with 17.0.8-18.1!

    Possibly tracker-miner-thunderbird.

There is also a setting in Thunderbird called "Enable Global Search and Indexer" under Preferences > Advanced > General tab

That is the one I meant, thanks.

In my case, it failed to work, I had to remove that package. Mind, I do
want indexing - it is just that it is unacceptably slow, slows the
entire thunderbird, and causes Th. to download my entire gmail online
folder to scan it, and that's gygabytes of size. Unacceptable on a
    limited internet.

unless you have a specific reason for using the obs repo then you are probably better off sticking with the version of Thunderbird in the oss repo.
    It's currently at version 17.0.7
That is what I am currently using and it performs as it should. No slowdowns or changes in performance for me.
Updates are usually pushed to the oss-update repo once testing is carried out to ensure no problems. You don't get that safety net when using the obs repo.
