Upgrading gnuplot in OpenSUSE 12.1

I have a system that is running OpenSUSE 12.1, and I wanted to upgrade gnuplot to the latest release. However, “zypper in gnuplot” informs me that “No update candidate for ‘gnuplot-4.4.3-4.1.2.x86_64’. The highest available version is already installed.” My other, newer system running OpenSUSE 12.3 has “gnuplot-4.6.1-2.1.1.x86_64”.

Is this because the repositories of OpenSUSE 12.1 are no longer updated? I would like to ask for advice regarding the most straightforward way to upgrade gnuplot on OpenSUSE 12.1. Thanks!

You don’t get updates for openSUSE 12.1 any more.

Yes and no.
12.1 is no longer supported since 2 months, so you won’t get any updates anymore.
But on openSUSE you don’t get newer versions of software through the standard update repo anyway, only security and bug fixes.
So even if 12.1 was still supported, gnuplot wouldn’t get updated.

If you want the latest software versions, upgrade your system to the newest openSUSE 12.3 (or Tumbleweed).

But in the case of gnuplot, you’re lucky:
The latest version (4.6.3 which is even newer than what’s contained in 12.3) is still available on OBS for 12.1:

on the other hand you might be unlucky if you update gnuplot and then
use that machine on an unsafe network and get kracked…

imo it is better to go ahead and move to a supported and fully
security patched version of openSUSE…or, if you need a longer
life distro ask and someone can give opinions on the offerings.

As previous posts have stated, 12.1 is EOL, so the best solution is to upgrade to 12.3. Alternatively, you can of course
install the latest version manually.

I know this is not answering your question, but having experienced gnuplot and metapost, I can recommend trying
Asymptote since it is much more powerful package.
