Thread: Problem Making Printer Settings Permanent with LibreOffice and Thunderbird

Default Problem Making Printer Settings Permanent with LibreOffice and Thunderbird

    Hi
I use an HP Laserjet 5M as my main printer. This has paper tray and manual feed tray. The printer defaults are supposed to work to use tray unless manual feed is loaded when the paper from this feed is supposed to be used. I use this function for envelopes and also use "scrap" paper for drafts this way.

Unfortunately when I try and print from Libreoffice and Thunderbird this seems to be overruled and the tray paper is always used. If I try changing the settings before printing they always revert to this unwanted behaviour. Is there some KDE setting somewhere which is overruling my choices in the applications and overrules the printer defaults?

Grateful for help here for the sake of the trees if nothing else as I am building up a big stock of "scrap" paper by printing drafts on new sheets.

There is a libreoffice default setting elsewhere, you might try it.
    Run "/usr/lib64/libreoffice/program/spadmin".

Hi and many thanks. I seem to have sorted the LibreOffice defaults using drop down menu but Thunderbird defies all logic.
Please let me know if you have further thoughts on T'bird.

No, sorry. Thunderbird should just remember settings from one time to
the next. There are some settings in the hidden expert config
    (preferences, advanced, edit configs).

Hi and thanks. I wrote too soon about LibreOffice. Even though I changed the setting it is volatile and reverts to the unwanted default. I shall try your command now but the Firefox and T'bird settings do the same thing. In other words they do not keep the setting last used but always revert to the unwanted setting, and this is before printing so the result is I have not been able to print as I wish for a while. I smell a KDE intervention somewhere but will let you know result of your command.
    Thanks again,

Hi so the "command" you gave didn't run but when I went to the file and clicked on it it opened and gave me the same window as if I had used the print settings menu item. I edited it, closed and tried LibreOffice again and the unwanted default had reappeared. So what should I edit now? Any ideas? BTW What kind of a file is "spadmin?"

Did you launch it as root?
    Code:
    kdesu /usr/lib64/libreoffice/program/spadmin
    Code:
    xdg-su -c /usr/lib64/libreoffice/program/spadmin

    It's an executable shell script.

Mmm, I forgot to say that.

Another possibility is adjusting defaults in cups (http://localhost:631)

I did get to CUPS this afternoon by a process of deduction and yes the driver default set there was what was doing it. Only visible using Yast and then you have to look.
Changed to Tray 1 and logged out and in and I think I have it right now. Many thanks for the kind and patient help, sorry I am so dumb.
    Budgie2.
