XFCE Vertical Panel Icons

I am using 12.2 and XFCE4. I have a vertical panel and a top horizontal panel, both with workspace switchers. The vertical panel workspace switcher does not diaplay application icons while the horizontal one does. I have used this same setup with Ubuntu and Debian, and had application icons in the vertical panel switchers in both.

Does anyone know how I can set up the vertical panel so the application icons show?

Any and all help appreciated.

Thanks

Have you added task manager widget to that panel??

No, I haven’t. I just looked at the items available for the panel and Task Manager wasn’t there, Window Buttons was. Is that the same thing?

What would a Task Manager have to do with application icons showing in the Workspace Switcher?

Well that is what it is called in KDE I don’t know XFCE4 but figured there might be something like it. ie a widget the displays the open apps

“Workspace switcher”

I didn’t see any suggestions for having application icons show in the workspace switcher in a vertical panel.

You got a reply about the task manager from gogalthorp. You said there
was no such thing. gogalthorp said that was the kde name. I said the
xfce name is Workspace switcher.

To this point, you have not replied to that, saying if it is what you
are looking for, or if it does not work. Ie, you got a suggestion, but
you did not comment on it. If you say that suggestion is wrong, and
explain why, and explain again what is it you seek, then people may
think about something else. Ok?

From my original post: “I have a vertical panel and a top horizontal panel, both with workspace switchers.”

I am looking for a reason that applications icons are not appearing in the workspace switcher in my vertical panel when they do in my horizontal switcher.

If you have some suggestions as to why the applications icons are not appearing in the Workspace Switcher, I’d appreciate you sharing.

Ok, with your problem clarified, then no, I don’t have any more ideas,
sorry.

I did temporarily switch my panel to vertical (yes, I use XFCE), and the
workspace switcher was there with the figures of the applications
inside, same as in horizontal mode.

You might try increasing the width of the vertical panel.

Ken

I have found a workaround. First, I renamed my XFCE config folder, which generated a new set when I logged back in. I set the vertical panel to 2 rows and app icons now show. This meant I had to manipulate the row size to get close to the width I wanted for the panel. At least now I have vertical panel that has app icons even if it is a little wide.

I had already tried that. I set the panel row size to maximum. The app icons didn’t show up. I have found and posted the work around I am using at present.

Again not a XFCE user but is ther not some where to set the size of the icons so they fit in the smaller space, since this seems to be the isssue??

I don’t see a setting for that, at least not in the panel config.

I tried adding a second panel, vertical, besides my main horizontal one.
I added a workspace switcher, and it did - but it is just a miniature
horizontal line, 2 mm high. And clicking on it, the desktop changes
appropriately, even if it is almost invisible.

However, if I switch my horizontal panel to be vertical, it works correctly.

Hi,

You should configure the panel if in vertical as deskbar.
When you are in the xfce4-panel-settings, there are three
options these are horizontal, vertical and deskbar.

Even in Deskbar mode, the app icons do not appear unless number of rows is set to 2.
