    Default Alacarte issues on new install

    I just re-installed openSUSE 12.3 and ran into the Alacarte problem:

    Code:
    Traceback (most recent call last):
      File "/usr/bin/alacarte", line 22, in <module>
        from Alacarte.MainWindow import MainWindow
      File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/Alacarte/MainWindow.py", line 33, in <module>
        from Alacarte.MenuEditor import MenuEditor
      File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/Alacarte/MenuEditor.py", line 25, in <module>
        class MenuEditor(object):
      File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/Alacarte/MenuEditor.py", line 26, in MenuEditor
        def _init_(self, name=os.environ['XDG_MENU_PREFIX'] + 'applications.menu'):
      File "/usr/lib64/python2.7/UserDict.py", line 23, in _getitem_
        raise KeyError(key)
    KeyError: 'XDG_MENU_PREFIX'
    alacarte-3.6.1-3.1.2

    I uninstalled and re-installed it. I also tried the fix found in another post on a similar problem, all to no avail. Anybody have a fix for this? Thank you in advance.

    That fix was for GNOME 3.8 on openSUSE 12.3. Are you using GNOME 3.8 ?

    I'm running GNOME v3.6.2.

    Not sure why such basic and important functionality needs a hack to operate for GNOME's basic install, but I do know I believe they are going downhill fast.

    The fix is, at least for a command line call to alacarte:

    Code:
    export XDG_MENU_PREFIX=""

    To be fair to GNOME: they dropped support for Alacarte over two years ago. It's probably not something we should be installing anymore.
