    Default xdm startup error

    Greetings everybody.

I have encountered the following problem, when I tried to make my old system run on a new laptop.

Whenever I start OS 12.1 in a normal way all I get at the end of the boot process is a console.
    Logging in and executing
    Code:
    init 3
    init 5
    cat /var/log/messages | tail -n 30
    yields the following output
    Code:

Now I tried to uninstall kde while keeping XFCE, the error messages changed, but still no GUI login.
After reinstalling kde from the DVD as well as updating the system I still get that message.

I have tried to look through the mentioned file (kdmrc) but up to one copy of the [X-*-Greeter] passage I have not found any duplicates.

    Furthermore the following was established:
    1. The system boots fine in failsafe mode, that is: GUI login is possible, mouse works etc.
    2. Normal boot leads to a GUI login if I add "x11failsafe" to the boot parameters. BUT then the mouse does not work.

I think it worth mentioning, that the the installation (upgrade) had to be made with "No ACPI" set, because else the screen was kind of shifted by 1/4, with the right side (where all the OK buttons are) appearing on the left as well as everything being in partially inverted colors.

My guess to that is that it has something to do with the GPU configuraion of my system:

    System XMG A522
    i5 3230M
    Nvidia GTX 660M
    HDD1: 500GB Seagate Momentus
    HDD2: 320GB Hitachi - system drive

Neither drivers from the nvidia repo, nor the drivers which come with CUDA5.0 installation files help, so I have no idea anymore what to change.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Does the laptop have an NVIDIA Optimus config? I.e. an integrated Intel GPU plus a discrete NVIDIA ? In that case installing the NVIDIA drivers borks your system.
At the konsole login screen, login with username and password, and do
    Code:
    su -c yast
You'll see the ncurses version of Yast. First thing to do is to reinstall xorg-x11-server . Some of it's files get replaced by symlinks to NVIDIA's files, which makes X fail to start on the Intel.
° Appreciate my reply? Click the star and let me know why.

° Perfection is not gonna happen. No way.

That does not do any good.

I've now force-updated all X11 KDE4 Base and KDE4 Desktop packages - still the same.
It was this way directly after re-install (upgrade) and the nvidia drivers did not improve the situation (neither did they worsen it - at least in an obvious way).

And as to Optimus - yes this laptop has that and I have not yet set up bumblebee or the like as I figured, that it should work with normal nvidia drivers - as long as only the nvidia GPU is used - which, going by the indicator LEDs it is.

Could you please boot in failsafe mode after a failed boot and post the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old ?

I have to mention, that I have in the meantime installed the bumblebee-drivers - but that does not help.
The message regarding the multiple passages in kdmrc is still the same.

You seem to have an incorrect /etc/xorg.conf, just try to delete or rename that.

And that KDM message doesn't matter. That one is normal...

That seems to have been the problem.

The system allows a GUI login now, but the mouse is dead.

The xorg.conf.nvidia-example and xorg.conf.nvidia-postun , when renamed into xorg.conf make the X-server crash.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled bumblebee packages as well as the xorg packages - no change to the configuration, a GUI login is still possible, but the problem with the mouse persists - also a new xorg.conf is not created (or do I have to do that manually from scratch?)

xorg.conf isn't used anymore by default.
Do you still have yours around? Then could you please post it?

And have you changed anything in /etc/xorg.conf.d?
Does the mouse still work when booting in failsafe mode? (this could indicate this is a kernel problem)

Well here's the old xorg.conf I've deleted as you've suggested:

    Code:
    # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
    # nvidia-xconfig: version 295.41 (buildmeister@swio-display-x86-rhel47-07.nvidia.com) Sat Apr 7 00:25:09 PDT 2012

    EndSection
The mouse has worked and is working if I start the system in failsafe mode.
And that is confusing. I have to admit that I never had any trouble with a mouse (or in this case a touchpad) on my old laptop and several other laptops before.

Well, I can tell you you figured wrong. To get a working Optimus config, you need bumblebee and the modified NVIDIA drivers. And, you cannot run an entire X session on the NVIDIA. The indicator does no more than tell you there's power on the NVIDIA. But X will run on the Intel, and as long as you don't install a bumblebee config, not one single program will run on the NVIDIA card.
