Thread: Dolphin Starts Twice

    Default Dolphin Starts Twice

    Running 12.3 with KDE desktop on 32 bit laptop. I have a Dolphin launcher in the system tray, bottom left of screen. When I click on it to start Dolphin not only do I get the dolphin screen but also another dolphin icon in the system tray bottom right and an indication that there are 2 instances of dolphin running. Also the bouncing icon continues to bounce for a minute or so even though the dolphin screen has opened.

    If I right click on the new icon which sits bottom right of screen I see "KSysTrayCmd" and menu options to Hide, Undock or Quit. If I select either Undock or Quit Dolphin closes. I can never get only one instance of dolphin. What is going on here please and how do I restore normal functioning?

    That dolphin icon is it the one that comes with KDE panel by default? That one with Activities next to it?
    If so you might try this:
    1) set dolphin to view hidden folders
    2)find /home/yourname/.kde4
    3) got to /home/yourname/.kde4/share/config in that folder
    4) look for & open with Kwrite plasma-desktop-appletsrc
    5) look for & then delete these lines:
    browser=preferred://browser, , ,\s
    filemanager=preferred://filemanager, , ,\s

    Now if you're using the default Kicker(not Lancelot like me) find Dolphin in Kicker rclick dolphin & select Add to Panel.
    Logout then Login in this might end your problem.
    Let us know if that works for you OK?

    It's OK if you didn't find it. It tells me a little bit more than I had the last time. Did you try this part yet?

    That'll get you a filing cabinet like icon depending on what icon set you're using on your panel. Once you have that does the problem persist?

    Hi,
    I have a filing cabinet icon on left next to desktop and activity manager icons. If I Lclick I get dolphin twice and when dolphin starts the bouncing ball continues for a while and I get a filing cabinet icon on the right. No change from original reported problem symptoms.

    Well time for last resort that I know of rename ~/.kde4 to old.kde4 then reboot.
    If that doesn't fix it then I don't know.

    Hi and thanks for the suggestion. Tried it. A small improvement as now I still get a second dolphin trying to open with the bouncing ball for about 20 seconds and then it gives up and the second instance vanishes.

    I thought the problem might have something to do with a network NFS share which is not reconnected when I reboot so I deleted that but no change so that wasn't it, although the error messages have gone from the startup scripts.

    Thanks again,
    Budgie2
