Hi. I’m running 12.3 64-bit with KDE 4.10.2. I’m staying in a hotel this week. I initially connected to the hotel wifi, but that connection tended to drop every so often, so now I am plugging into the ethernet port in the wall, which is giving great service. But even though I am wired in, it is clear to me that the wireless adapter is maintaining a connection to the wireless router. The little wireless light on my laptop is continually flashing, and occasionally a get a notification that the wireless has dropped. I guess my question is: is this normal? Why would network manager be maintaining a connection to a wireless router when I am connected to the network by cable? In principle I suppose I could just turn wireless off, but I don’t think I’ve seen this behavior in earlier versions of suse.

i wonder that also and can only guess it is maintained (but not
used to move traffic) just in case you are (say) watching a movie
when you suddenly unplug the wire and walk to another room…

you could right click the Network Manager icon and disable the
wireless…but, then you would need to remember to enable it before
suddenly yanking out the wire and . . .

i see that behavior in my daily driver (openSUSE 11.4
Evergreen)…but, i disable wireless…
and, if i know i’m gonna go mobile i first enable wireless and then
disable wired…so, when i shut down it automatically boots up to
wireless and looking for a connection (and, it remembers several of
the places it might wake up, again…is nice!
OK, then. I guess it’s normal. I used 11.4 for a long time (just switched to 12.3), and if you’re saying that the same behavior exists in that version, then I guess I just never had opportunity to see it. In reality, I only plug in (usually) in the absence of a wireless choice, so I can believe that I might never have noticed. I suspect my preconceived notion of what should happen is rooted in Windows, which I’m pretty sure shuts down wireless in the presence of a wired connection. In any event, as long as its normal behavior, I am content.

well, i do not know if it is normal, or not…i do know that it works
that way in 11.4, and that is the only openSUSE i have ever used on a
wireless capable device…
but, it seems like a great idea (to me)–as long as NM is ‘smart
enough’ to not have collisions of moving wired and wireless bits!
and, while still plugged in, if for some strange reason the wired
stopped working (or just got REAL slow) i would hope NM would
smoothly and transparently shift to use whatever was fastest/most
reliable…
doesn’t that sound like a good plan? (no matter what did or should
have happened in Windows?)
