    Hi Dilbert,

I am not sure if some sounds are any indication of approaching hazard, however, you may try fsck to check the filesystem.
(It should be running on boot, anyway.)
For physical check, well, if your hdd supports S.M.A.R.T. you can try smartctl part of smartmontools.
Both are available in the repos, you can check the man-pages for usage, root rights required.

    hello good day

    @vazhavandan
think that the sound has something to do with the drive.

in the past years i had several computers - that came to "DEAD" while they suffered of somekind of harddrive-crash.

well i need to test the drive. Guess the so called smart-test would be a good thing

    have a great day

    Yes, that's the tool.

First query it (-a parameter), examine the output. If in doubt, post it
    here (code tags, please.

Do a short test, wait two minutes, then query for the result.

Then run the long test. Wait the time it says, maybe more, then query
    the result.

Alternatively, you can download and use the tool some disk manufacturers
provide. For example, Seagate provides Seatools: you burn it to a CD and
boot with it. The test is more verbose, and it can print a form valid
for returning the drive in warranty to them.

    hi all and hello Robin

thx alot for all the hints. I will run the S.M.A.R.T. tools later the weekend. Therefore i need to install them via repos. They are *not* shipped with the OpenSuse system.
Anyway. i do some tests with S.M.A.R.T and keep you posted

    have a great weekend.

Of course they are! Even on the LiveCDs...

You can query your harddisk status like this f.e.:
    Code:
    sudo /usr/sbin/smartctl -a /dev/sda

Yes, they are. The command line is named "smartctl", installed by default.

    Please just run

    Code:
    smartctl -a /dev/sda
and paste it all back here - using code tags, not php tags. Advanced
    editor, '#' button.
