my advice would be to use as few Window's applications as possible..
in less time than figuring out how to make WINE dependable you can
seek, learn and use a native linux solution which will be faster and
    more secure..

sorry, but i don't know what a "download manager" is so i can't
recommend a native linux one to you.....

that said: i have been known to use wget which i 'think' does
everything a "download manager" can do....and, i _guess_ there is
probably a GUI front end for it also..

A bit further then DenverD: don't try to make your linux machine a 'my complete windows on linux'. Use linux native programs to get the max out of your linux experience.
If you run KDE, take a look at kGet. But there are other native linux downloadmanagers.

kget is a native GUI download manager for Linux. Since I am not familiar
with IDM I have not the simplest idea if it has the same features or not.
Depending on what someone uses there may be also plugins for Firefox or
Chrome or whatever else, which might be of interest.

I practice a lot of tutorials using Youtube so i do heavy downloading.
In Internet download manager there is a prompt which asks to download the video. The best thing about idm is that the prompt appears on almost every site that has videos! Be it Youtube, facebook, any educational website or pornsite!!

Basically I want a download manager which offers a automatic prompt for videos to download

Then look for an extension for Firefox or Chrome. I'm sure they're out there.

For that I use the Firefox plugin DownloadHelper (downloads and converts).

Even if you manage to install IDM in wine the rsult will be more than
frustrating as I would say you then also have to install the windows web
browser of your choice in wine to make use of it.

    thanks!!!!
    did two things:
1.removed wine (thereby eliminating my dependancy on windows programs )
2.Installed firefox plugin downloadhelper (helps in conversion as well)

    thanks a lot everyone
