Any chance you tell your potential helpers which version of openSUSE you are running?

    SOLVED!!!

After doing some digging in wireshark I found out that my DNS server was giving me two IP addresses for media.steampowered.com,
    1) 87.248.210.253
    2) 87.248.210.254

For some reason, for certain http requests the domain was always resolving to the latter. I found that I couldn't connect (not even ping) the .245 address.

So fix is to add the first IP (which I could connect to) to my /etc/hosts file for media.steampowered.com, and the steam client's update/downloader feature started working successfully.

    Step by step:
    1) Open Konsole
    2) su
    type your password
    3) cd etc
    4) ls
    5) mv hosts /home/(YourUserName)/hosts
    6) edit hosts file (add 87.248.210.253 media.steampowered.com)
    Code:
    #
    # hosts This file describes a number of hostname-to-address
    # mappings for the TCP/IP subsystem. It is mostly
    # used at boot time, when no name servers are running.
    # On small systems, this file can be used instead of a
    # "named" name server.
    # Syntax:
    #
    # IP-Address Full-Qualified-Hostname Short-Hostname
    #

    127.0.0.1 localhost
    87.248.210.253 media.steampowered.com

Smile Fatal Error: Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connect. (Solved)

We are happy to hear you have found a solution to your problem and shared it with us. I understand you would like to indicate the problem is solved. We do not normally go back and modify message thread titles to indicate they are solved. What I suggest is to modify the title of your last message to add the word solved (Just as I will do here) and to edit the message thread Tags at the bottom to say solved. I shall add the tag for you and again, happy you have found your own solution.

Well, your DNS server and every DNS in the world.

Thus that domain has a problem.
