    Then you have somewhere a setting which conflicts. It works here without
    resizing, shows the thumbnail of the image in the folder as well as a
    smaller thumbnail in the folder icon.

    This is what I see. I have converted the image to several types which made no difference:

    I then scaled to a smaller image and it can be seen in the folder above. Since I have not played with this before, it is working as the default setup for me. Why not duplicate a setup as I have done here and show us what you see.

    I do not know what you mean by duplicating your setup or how I should do
    it at all.
    But here is what I see (I have done nothing special other than that
    previews are enabled, this is plain KDE 4.10.0 on openSUSE 12.3 64bit)

    Ok, at least it looks like I'm not alone with this bug. I have tested two brand new installations of x86 and x86_64 and both does not show me thumbnail using supplied test JPEG.

    Martin, is you installation a fresh install or upgrade?

    This one is a fresh install of 12.3 (from what the pictures are) but
    with a /home which existed on earlier versions.
    I test what happens when I do it with a new user which has no old
    settings somewhere.

    Bingo, that was it. With a new user the thumbnail for the image is
    created but none is shown in the directory icon.
    Now I wonder where we have to add a setting to force it, there must be a
    setting at least in some configuration file otherwise it could not work
    for my standard user.
    dolphinrc does not contain anything which points me in the right direction.
    Any idea where else some configuration for the thumbnail creation in kde
    might be stored?

    Okular is able to build the thumb using this command:

    okular thumbnail:///full/path/to/IMGP5587.JPG

    Also, if I resize to 2582px - folder shows thumb, if 2583px - no thumb

    Maybe there is a size limit for local files cached somewhere? There is no such setting in 12.3, but it was in previous KDE version. So maybe it is still checking for this legacy setting.

    I found that in my standard user where the thumbnail for the image
    folder works also for large files there is a setting in
    ~/.kde4/share/config/kdeglobals
    Code:
    [PreviewSettings]
    MaximumRemoteSize=5242880
    MaximumSize=104857600
    camera=true
    file=true
    fonts=true
    If I copy that MaximumSize line at the same section in kdeglobals for
    the new user (this corresponds to 100MB) then it works there as well
    (dolphin needed to be restarted to take effect).

    Edit: or even better loout and login agin in the graphical session to be sure it takes effect.
