Thread: Using a APC UPS with openSUSE

Default Using a APC UPS with openSUSE

    openSUSE v12.3
    gnome v3.6.2

I have a APC backups-cs500 battery backup UPS. It has a data port. When I plug it into a USB port on the computer, a battery icon appears in the top panel.

Sadly, it shows the battery as totally depleted. Also quite wrong.

I installed apcupsd. It works. the utility apcaccess shows what I expect: the battery is 100% charged. The desktop icon is still at 0%.

How do I get the desktop indicator to jive with reality?

I use KDE. There, the battery monitor is saying "100% charged. AC not plugged in".

I have not had any long outages yet with opensuse 12.3. While running 12.2 (or maybe it was 12.1), I did have one. I set the KDE power monitor to shut the system down on power failure, and that works. It apparently cannot tell whether the UPS is plugged in, but it can tell that it is discharging and appears to use that for shutdown.

I don't normally use Gnome. If I remember, I'll briefly login to Gnome when I next login, and see what the power monitor says.

In case you are not aware, there's a GUI applet "gapcmon" which you can install. When running, it sits in the tray and tells you the status if you move the mouse over it.

    Maybe it is a bug.

Please see my blog n monitoring an APC UPS: APC UPS Monitor applications apcupsd & apcupsd-gui (gapcmon) installation and the new openSUSE 12.3 - Blogs - openSUSE Forums

The default battery is intended to work with a Laptop battery and not your UPS battery as they are not the same thing. Read through the blog and then ask questions there if you like. I have not used it with GNOME before, but the apcupsd application is not KDE specific as far as I know but my examples where made using KDE.

Yes, that provided the necessary information to use the UPS. It is working as expected now.

    Thank you.

I remembered to do that today.

The Gnome power monitor says "fully charged". There is probably a difference between your UPS and mine, and the power monitor knows how to talk to mine but not to yours.
