If booting in graphical mode. What about text mode?
Plymouth has text mode splash screen and can also run without splash screen but still handling password request. Unfortunately mkinitrd luks script is broken in this respect so it will never reuse passwords when plymouth is active. Probably someone has to file bug report or point to existing one so maintenance update can be requested.

That "text mode splash screen" is it text, or graphic? A graphical
splash screen on text mode is kind of absurd, IMHO.

True, any local display can handle graphics - but not headless machines.
Some people boot even machines accessing the boot screen via serial port!

I will see it when I install that VM, I expect.

plymouth automatically starts in text mode if output device is not graphic capable (i.e. not framebuffer).
