Thunderbird hangs on reading mails

Hello

When I click in Thunderbird on a mail in my imap inbox to read it, Thunderbird does not show the mail and hangs. Even after closing Thunderbird it still runs in the background. I have to kill it. Even after restarting Thunderbird, I am not able to read this mail. The only workaround to be able to read mails, is to delete the inbox.msf file. I face this problem only on SuSE Linuxes, but with different mail servers. This is unacceptable an should be fixed asap.

It is nice that you think “This is unacceptable an should be fixed asap.”, but my guess i that this your post does not help very much in getting this done. For several reasons:

  1. You did not even bother to tell which version of openSUSE you are using. Thus nobody now knows what should be fixed.

  2. We are not the fixers. These forums are for openSUSE users to help openSUSE users. It could be that there are fellow openSUSE users that use Thunderbird on openSUSE (I am almost sure ther are), but these users are apperently happy going on with there Thunderbird without experiencing what you do. At least I am not seeing threads around here with the same problem.
Thus, if I were you, I would consider it possible that it is something special to your system and maybe even something due to you doing something to your system. When you agree with me, I think that it thus a bit harsh to command that your fellow users should fix this.

Please consider to provide information on your system and ask for help with your problem.

I’m using openSUSE 12.1 with Thunderbird 17.0.4-33.55.1 on it.

After removing the tracker-miner-thunderbird package the problem has gone. I do not remember, that I installed this package and there are no packages that require it. What do I using tracker-miner-thunderbird for? Has anyone an idea, why this package was installed on my system and why it makes thunderbird not working proper? May be someone could reproduce my problem, when tracker-miner-thunderbird is installed.

As openSUSE 12.1 is out of support, I guess that your chances of somebody being able to reproduce this on 12.1 are slim.

My advice would be to go for 12.3. Then you can also see what is installed when you install Thunderbird.

I have seen the same problem just a few hours ago when updating the 12.2
to 12.3 on our daughters laptop (gnome 3 as desktop).
That stupid package that I always remove and block was installed and
locked randomly functionality in TB as if it hangs.
It seems to be one of the “recommends” in gnome when Thunderbird is
installed.
I think you should file a bug against it and give us the number so
people can comment on it (with newer openSUSE versions also).
On my own machines I do not see the problem as I am a KDE user.

Sorry, I am to fast. But I am glad that it is reproducable in 12.2 and 12.3 also.
Well not realy glad, when it was gone, that would have been better of course.

IIRC, even the Thunderbird package maintainer recommends removing it…

I concur removing the tracker-miner package solves intermittent hangs with Thunderbird especially when reading email messages. The package gets installed for both Firefox and Thunderbird.

If you let the tracker do it’s indexing then the system will stabilize. Still the performance overheads are unreasonable.

I suspect it also taxes the network, trying to index remote imap folders.
