I found an answer. I didn't like it but it's an answer. There are no mpeg thumbnails possible in this version of KDE according to what I read in a post on the KDE forum . It was not part of this release. It was some what a regression. So fugly icons for video files in KDE 4.8.5 is what you get. I'll have to learn to live with.

If the mpgthumbnaller that works for KDE file previews isn't rolled into your distro on the next version up in the release series you don't get them either.

Not part of KDE 4.8.5 in 12.2. It is not in the repo.

    It's installed.

    Dolphin doesn't/can't use it.
All the mpeg thumbnail packages I could find were installed.

Do you see the following in the repos

    kdemultimedia4-thumbnailers

    libffmpegthumbnailer4

IIRC you have to use the correct mix and then set dolphin accordingly.

    OK I wasn't using it in 12.2 ( and I use kde4.10 )
But I test what was there and the one package that worked was: kde-mplayer-thumbnailer
    Just that package

But it may not be available in 4.8 you are using

I have both of them installed now what I had to configure in Dolphin was a differnet offering for video file though.

    I had libffmpegthumbnailer4 installed.

kdemultimedia4-thumbnailers never showed up in any searched in YAST2 untill I put the exact name in.. Strange.

Now I have mpeg thumbnails... Using one of the packman offerred thumbnailers. Not either of those two.
