Default Why does Yast download slowly.

It would seem that Yast is much slower downloading on average than my web browser. It has been that way since I started using this distro in early 2006. Does anyone know why?

Look at it like this, your web browser is requesting a small bit from
whatever site you are using. YaST is downloading from repositories that
may indeed be quite loaded and on average will request more data and
probably encrypted data. All of these things add to performance drain.
However, for me in most cases performance is quite good. If you have
performance issues you could check which repos/mirror you are using and
find one that is better suited to your geographic locale and performance
    needs.

Yast on my system uses my full net speed. Though it seems to start each new rpm download slowly. Perhaps it is not reusing an existing connection and instead starting a new one?

    Can you quantify "slower"?

Personally, I use zypper, and when it has to hit a mirror that's not my
local mirror, I tend to max my connection out (only about 300 Kbps).

I dunno, like I said I don't have an issue with it.
I tend to use zypper like Jim for anything major and YaST for little add-
    ons.

On some occasions I can get 2 megabytes plus on the net. As a matter of fact downloading an openSUSE dvd is a good example, but that is not representative of every download I make. It's just a matter of the fact that Yast never seems to exceed say maybe 500 kilobytes.

I had assumed that it was probably what I was connected to but it still seems a little out of proportion.

I was under the impression that Yast used zypper as it's back end.

YaST software management and online update interact with the zypper
infrastructure, but they are somewhat different as well.

Try it with zypper - it'll also tell you what speed you're getting.

No, both YaST and zypper are independent programs, and both use some
common libraries to do the work.

    In fact, YaST is older.

YaST download seeds have increased by leaps and bounds from when i started using it with openSUSE 11.0
YaST installer is much better now with installs happening only after completing downloads of all required rpms instead of simultaneous download and install and all.
You may try various mirrors listed here openSUSE Download Mirrors - Overview
I think the downside to using mirrors is that they generally have packages which form base version of OS and may not have latest software updates.
