Thread: Application Locations

  1. #1

    Default Application Locations

When I install packages they don't always end up writing an entry into the application launcher menu. So I can browse around and find some of the directories and files created but I'm now sure which is the executable file nor how to bring it into the menu or onto the desktop. This is pretty basic and there may be a sticky about this but I sure would appreciate any help on this general subject.
The specific packages I'm referring to are Mplayer and libxine 1 which both show installed in Yast?!?

Mplayer should show, it may do so on reboot.
libxine is a multimedia codec related to Xine

Typically you would benefit from using smplayer, which is a much more useful front to mplayer

    I'm assuming you use 12.2?

    Mplayer and libxine 1
In linux you have backend and front end packages
mplayer=backend alone, not GUI.Videos can be player using Command line or terminal
you should install font end packages for mplayer like smplayer,umplayer,gnome-mplayer etc...
    GNOME Version 3.20.2
    openSUSE Leap 42.3 64-bit

Thanks for your help; I just don't know the UNIX cli well enough to get much done in it. I know DOS pretty well and can hack away at router and switch configs all day long but I don't really know where to start with all this stuff...
I disabled the packman for ver. 12.2 Also I did the switch thing as advocated in that link.

Update: installing smplayer seems to have 'fixed' the problem but I have no idea why, Mplayer is described as a graphical app so I figured it would show up in the menu. ???

Yes thanks; I had already done that using the GUI. So now smplayer shows up but (and I know this is TOTALLY different * I think *) but when I attempt to move a video file from my Nikon to my Home directory I get an: Unknwon error 150. Submit a full bug report to KDE blah, blah...
ARGHHH!!! Why oh why couldn't it have been error 137???

Nikon being a camera of some kind.
Are you browsing it in dolphin? Or Digikam?
When you say Move > do you mean copy?
    Is Digikam seeing the device?
