thunderbird: create manual account

I want to create an account in my laptop that points to my desktop, that
has dovecot imap server. Thunderbird says that it can not detect my
settings, so I want to force them, no automatic detection. Impossible.

Is there a way?

I enter my name, mail address (it complains, but it is a local network
address with DNS), and password. Continue (it starts detection), then I
click “manual”. I fill the correct entries (they are correct, I’m
looking at my desktop configuration), but only available button is
“re-test” or “cancel”. “Done” is grayed. I press retest and it says
failed. I want it to accept nevertheless! It is my account and it worked
previously in this same laptop 5 minutes ago when I deleted my account
to purge the files.

Hi, OK, this is what works for me, I just checked:

I add a new mail account.

I used the name “nada” and the email address “nada@nada.nad”, leaving the password blank and unticked for it to remember the password.

I click continue and immediately the “manual configuration”.

Now it is important here that you enter all info about pop3 & smtp accounts (I used “pop3.nada.nad” and “smtp.nada.nad”). It is also important that you leave none of the drop down choices to automatic (i.e. “port”, "SS"L and “Authertification” : none must be set to automatic, set some other value from the drop down boxes - preferrably those of your ISP…,). As soon as that is done, the “Done” button gets ungrayed and I can save the account (you can then change everything to your values).
Does that work for you?

YES!

Even easier if you have network off in thunderbird. Thankyou!

Glad I could help you (rather than the usual other way around… ) Lenwolf
