Thread: Desktop Search application (I miss Google desktop search) :)

  1. #1

Default Desktop Search application (I miss Google desktop search) :)

Is there any Desktop search application for look in the Emails and documents?
I'm looking for something similar to google desktp search or windows search for WIN7.

    Thanks

So I don't see your desktop used mentioned in your post. I use Kfind, which is no longer installed by default when you use KDE. Just open up YaST / Software / Software Management and search on kfind and install it when found.

I use recoll, you find it in the KDE extra repository (it is in reality
no KDE application but a qt application).

I use recoll too. Great application.

FYI recommend you get antiword too:

    Code:
    john@opensuse122:~> rpm -qa | egrep "antiword|recoll"
    antiword-0.37-2.1.x86_64
    recoll-1.17.3-1.2.x86_64

    +1

It is also easy to find out what else makes sense by using "File -> show
    missing helpers" after install.

I just tried adding recoll from the 4.9 extra repo, but it has an non-providable dependency: antiword.

perhaps it is in OBS. will check later.

I do use Kfind and like it a lot*. Was disappointed to see that it is not part of the default install any longer. I don't know what "semantic desktop" **** the KDE devs are trying to push as a replacement -- I do remember seeing something a while ago about Dolphin's search features plugging into such, so maybe that is what is getting the blessing now.

(*though, I don't think it is capable of searching through email ... though, for that, there is always the email client anyway)

I'm using 11.4, gnome, and there is a desktop search tool, based on
"tracker". It is installed by default. If on the application search box
I type "search" and press enter, I get the desktop search dialog. Second
entry in the list is the configuration dialog. It can search in emails,
    if i remember correctly.

KDE has its own tool. But you have not said what version and desktop you
    use...

    Hi
Have you tried the default search tool, tracker?

recoll is agnostic to your desktop.
I guess Gnome 3 has an inbuilt search also, but I am not sure.
