Exclamation Please help me with random freeze ups.

    Hi all

Please help me sort out why my laptop is freezing up at times. This mainly happens at boot and when the display went into sleep / shutdown. Note only the display switches off the laptop itself is set to never sleep on AC power.

When this happens my screen flickers with these blocks as is shown in the photos. I also included the output of the hwinfo http://ubuntuone.com/4vs7fimbTQg598Et5bjPTB command.

Is there any place I can enable logging or see what it causing this and then blacklisting the offending module or try to fix this please.

Ok, I uninstalled the ATI proprietary driver and rebooted the machine a few times. On the fourth reboot same thing happened again. So at least it doesn't seem like it is this binary driver from ATI that is causing the issue...

hmmm, whenever I have seen this in the past (2 times) it was a hardware issue. Once on macbook laptop, replace motherboard and the other was a bad video card. Are you dual booting to windows? Does it work ok there?

    Hi

anika200, I dual boot with windows 7 and only uses windows 7 for Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2. Typical gaming sessions may go on for 12+ hours in which the machine is stressed the whole time. I never get any freezes or crashes in windows.

Before coming to openSUSE I used ubuntu 12.04 and never had this issue as well. I only ever get this happening as kdm is about to start at boot, or when resuming some times after having been away from the machine for a few hours and the screen switched off.

This leads me to believe that it may be a bug or incompatibility with kdm perhaps?

To help you, we need info. openSUSE version, (we already know it's KDE), driver versions used, what's the hardware, video card model etc. The better your info, the better your chances for help.

I've seen this too as a result of a video card being in a degrading condition. Where initially Windows seemed to work, the issue lasted for two weeks before the video card gave up completely. Please post output of
    Code:
    tail -20 ~/.xsession-errors
    dmesg | tail -20

    Hi Knurpht

Thanks, I increased the length of the tail info here: http://ubuntuone.com/76XfwYgIWoyJRNog3YInaR as most of it in dmesg seems to be network related frame buffers?

Here is the info for tail -20 ~/.xsession-errors :
    Code:

IMO, hibernation is unstable in Linux. I also have crashes related to
it, and there is no solution (two machines, different versions). I just
    live with it.

Does this only happen after resuming from hibernation/suspend? Then I'd suspect the video driver not being unloaded/reloaded like it should. If that's the case you'd have to create some rule in /etc/pm/sleep.d/ to unload the driver when going into hibernation/suspend, reload it on the way out.
