Atheros AR8162 Fast Ethernet [1969:1090] (rev 10) not detected

Hi,

At my workplace i need to use a wired connection to have net access.

The initial post on this topic was here: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/network-internet/480375-re-unable-access-net-via-proxy-server-12-2-a.html

The ethernet card has not been detected. The LAN cable does not show any blinking lights.** ifconfig** does not show any eth0 or eth1 entry, just shows ‘lo’

lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net

02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4727] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Broadcom Corporation Device [14e4:051b]
Kernel driver in use: bcma-pci-bridge
03:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR8162 Fast Ethernet [1969:1090] (rev 10)
Subsystem: Lenovo Device [17aa:3978]

I read somewhere that compat-wireless needs to be installed. I could not find it in the standard repos + Packman. Do i have to compile the driver?

Compat wireless fir 12.2 is in this repo
Index of /repositories/driver:/wireless/openSUSE_12.2

A one click is here

Though I can’t confirm if this is what you need

If the above Tip doesn´t work, see here: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/network-internet/477271-problem-connecting-net-hp-pavillion-h8-1213-w-attansic-ethernet-controller.html

Those links will get you later wireless drivers than you have in the standard
kernel.

There is no 1969:1090 device in any kernel (yet). You will need a driver from
the vendor.

Hi
And if you don’t want to build the driver, I’ve popped a build of the
alx kernel module in my TESTING repository for 12.2 and 12.2 update.

Hi Malcolm,

I added your repo from Index of /repositories/home:/malcolmlewis:/TESTING/openSUSE_12.2

But when i tried to install alx-kmp-desktop or alx-kmp-kernel i got an error message that nothing provides alx-scripts=0.

What do you suggest?

Hi
Ahh, will need to refine the spec file then. I’m not at home this
weekend, so may not be until Monday before I can revist…

Once again, malcolm to the rescue.
I will keep that rpm on my hd, every time there is a kernel update
I have to compile alx. Reputtion point will be added again to you in a moment.

Edit: The reputation button is telling me to spread it first before giving you another reputation malcolm.

Hi
I need to fix the script error  There is the update repo, so
shouldn’t need to rebuild, but always handy to have a src rpm around…

Hi, I’ll wait till Malcolm comes up with a fix.

Hi
OK, it’s now rebuilding, there are two files to download and install
now;

  • alx-kmp-<your+kernel_flavor>
  • alx-scripts

It’s just a helper script (alx-enable) to switch between either alx or
atl1c, it needs to be run as root user. It just saves having to
manually blacklist the other driver.

Hi,

It still doesn’t work. I installed alx-kmp-desktop and rebooted my laptop. Not only did the Atheros card not get detected, even my wireless would not come up. I had to uninstall alx and its script to restart my wireless.

Is it a problem with the blacklisting? What is the solution?

Hi
Did you run the script after rebooting? Which modules (lsmod) are loaded, also what drivers are in use (lspci -nnk).

Hi,

I didn’t know that i have to run the script. How do i do it?

lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net

02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4727] (rev 01)

03:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR8162 Fast Ethernet [1969:1090] (rev 10)

I just ran alx-enable as root and got this message:

Disabling atl1c … [OK] Module disabled:
kernel/drivers/net/ethernet/atheros/atl1c/atl1c.ko

Hope it will work now. But i can only check the wired connection tomorrow.

Nope it still doesn’t work.

LAN card still not getting detected and wireless too is down.

Could make wireless work only after removing alx-kmp-desktop and rebooting.

Hi
Ok, then don’t worry about the script, lets just add a blacklist for the
old driver. As root user you need to
edit /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf and add;

blacklist atl1c

Reboot and see how that goes, also check that the alx driver is loaded.

Hi,

I assumed that the alx-script would automatically put that blacklist entry in blacklist.conf. But anyway i did as you said, installed alx-kmp-desktop again and still no use and again no wireless.

What do you wand me to post from lsmod?

No hardware issue — it is working in windows.

Hi
That the alx module is loaded (it should be) and also do you see the
driver in use now for the output from lspci -nnk

Anything in the message logs, dmesg?

Else I think you might have to head over and ask the kernel folks
direct;

Hi Malcolm,

From lscpi -nnk | grep -iA2 net i do not see any driver in use for Atheros Communications AR8162 fast ethernet. The drive for wireless card is detected but as usual no wireless.

When i install alx-kmp-desktop, alx-script comes as a dependency so it is always there. Why do i need to separately add an entry in 50-blacklist.conf? Because running alx-enable only outputs the message module atl1c not detected — this is normal.

No output from dmesg | grep -i eth0

So finally do you suggest to knock at the doors of the kernel guys.
