    Ah! I see. Yes, in that case a byte compare is faster.

    Maybe... maybe it can be argued that if the processor is fast, reading a
    single file straight is faster than reading two files in chunks because
    the disk head has to jump about, but... that's too thin. :-)


    Maybe in some circumstances it would be useful it the filesystem
    metadata stored a checksum of each file.

    Hello,
    thanks for the reply everyone.

    Yes these are indeed files on different folders on my local host. I was using rsync as a way to test that files are identical. The problem now is that even the checksums are identical rsync does not report that (by having none files for "updating") that but it gives a full list of files that have to change.

    Is there any way to make rsync check only checksums and not timestamps?
