Thread: 12.2 and KDE3 problems

    Question 12.2 and KDE3 problems

Yes, I know KDE3 is old hat, but I still need to ask this.

I upgraded (if that's the right term) from openSUSE 11.4 (great version, that! I'll really miss it) to 12.2 a few weeks ago and though I have tracked down and fixed all the bugs that have been giving me troubles, I still have two that I just can't get rid of.

The first is fairly minor as there are ways around it. It appears that KDE3 is missing its kio_slave sysinfo, so I get nothing back from clicking "My Computer" and, if I try it from an open Konqueror window, I get an error saying that the protocol is not supported. I did try using an earlier version of the kde3 sysinfo package but that required a version of hwinfo that doesn't appear to be around anymore.

The second is a bit more of an annoyance in that I cannot unmount a USB stick or SD card that has previously been mounted automatically. This worked well in KDE3 on openSUSE 11 but all I get now is "Reason: Not authorized to perform operation" from Mounthelper. The only options I have there is to either log in as root and dismount it there (too much effort required) or to just yank the thing out (not a good idea, really). I seem to recall a similar problem on an earlier openSUSE version (possibly 10.something) but I forget now what it was.

Both these faults appear to be KDE3 based as they don't appear to be happening in KDE4 (no, I do NOT want to use KDE4 - I have my reasons! ). Not seen anything related here other than questions on mounting but that side of it works fine here. Any ideas?

I still can't believe that openSUSE maintains a dead desktop like KDE 3.5,so of course it's going to give a lot of headaches cause with time it's going to break bit by bit,the only way is forward!

As an alternative to kde3 you might want to try razorQT
    Index of /repositories/X11:/QtDesktop/openSUSE_12.2
    Leap 15.1_KDE

If really insist on persevering with KDE3, then I would recommend you chase these issues up on the dedicated mailing list

    opensuse-kde3@opensuse.org

    KDE3 - openSUSE

You're more likely to get the help you require there.

openSUSE is a community of software freedom loving individuals...one
tiny part of that community wants to keep KDE3 alive, so they do...

which is ok because it gives the folks who want to use it a way that
they can...AND in no way slows the advances of other desktop environments..

its a win win for freedom of choice....and, for the community--suggest
you read the article pointed to in my sig!

(on the other hand, i like KDE4--but didn't until i forced myself to
leave behind KDE3 and become familiar with it)

    Absolutely.

(Please lets not argue about kde being old or whatever, that doesn't
    help the poster)

OP, if you are not familiar with mail lists, here is some help:

    Specially the nettiquete link ;-)

Well dd I must correct myself, when I said that I can't believe that openSUSE still maintains a KDE 3.5 desktop,I really meant that I couldn't believe that it could pull the resources for maintaining it,I don't have a problem with choices, but still in time we will have to stick with recent and alive projects, then a dead project,it guaranties the quality of the software!

openSUSE is a community distribution - that is to say, it is maintained by individuals of their own free will; some of those people maintain KDE3 programs and I, for one, am glad they do as there are some KDE3 programs which still have more functionality than their KDE4 equivalents. So though I stopped using the KDE3 desktop some time ago, I value the work of those who maintain KDE3 programs.

kio_sysinfo needs HAL thus it has been removed. You can make a desktop icon with link to media:/ instead.
