Default Apparent bug in LibreOffice Impress

    Hi,

I am running openSUSE 11.4 (64bit) and have LibreOffice 3.5:build-403. I have been creating presentation files for lectures, which entails importing jpeg files off a DVD supplied by the publisher of a textbook. Typically I put more material into each file than will be needed in any given class: then after class, I cut the unused slides and paste them into a newly created and named file for the next day's lecture.

Systematically, when I do this, the original file, after being saved and re-opened, lacks ALL images. Of course it is missing entirely the slides I had deliberately cut. But it is also missing the images (that had been imported as jpegs) on the (ostensibly) unaltered pages.

This is very troubling. Many hours of preparation go into these files, and to risk finding them corrupted the next time I need them is unacceptable.

    Any suggestions? Thanks, JDW

Chances are you are importing them incorrectly. Like its proprietary
counterpart, Impress has the ability to either import the file directly
into the .odp file, or else it can link to files on the local system.
The former is, in my opinion, the right way to go 99.9% of the time, but
the latter is nice if you do not want to duplicate data and use up hard
space, and if you NEVER plan on moving your pictures or presentations to
other systems without moving everything (for example, if everything is
in a single directory). How can you tell? Well, import as you have
been doing and see if your files get MUCH bigger. JPEGs are already
compressed so the ODP file should grow by about the size of each JPEG
youa dd. If it grows by just a little bit... a few bytes or a KB maybe,
then you're linking which is just fine, except that once you move/remove
the pictures or the presentation the links are broken.

    Insert (menu): Picture: From File...

I believe that is the right way to do it. Dragging/dropping, on the
other hand, I BELIEVE will make links. There may be a setting to change
that behavior, but I always just use Insert: Picture: From File.

    Good luck.

Thanks very much -- that sounds plausible. I have been inserting as:

    Insert (menu): Picture: From File...

I'll do the check you suggest. Thanks for helping me understand, and be able to work around this. JDW

Well, that sounds like you are already doing it the right way, but
perhaps by watching the file size after you save you'll at least be able
to have some idea about whether or not things are behaving as you expect.

    Good luck.

I'm not familiar with impress, but in writer the default is insert the
image in the odt file. In fact, when I link I have to select a tick box
and bypass a warning (that the image will not be saved together with the
odt). It is thus more difficult to link the images, which is the option
    I prefer.
