dell-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft and Hard Blocked but phy0: Wireless Lan is not Blocked

Good Day

I have installed OpenSUSE 12.2 on a Vostro 1520 Laptop, it works great except for the wireless lan.
I have followed everything tagged “Vostro 1520 Wireless OpenSuse” and no Luck…

“rfkill list” shows only dell-wifi is hard and soft blocked and the wireless switch is turned on.
“rfkill unblock” does nothing…
With network manager not event the wireless LED is on but as soon as I go into Network settings via YaST the LED comes on but still no joy, the wireless hardware is disabled.

I do have wired connection and updated at lot of…stuff.

Oh yes I am new to None-Microsoft OSs so please take pitty on me .

Lets see the output

And also of

/sbin/lspci -nnk

Man I am a n00b…

It worked fine in Win7 but Windows is gone nowrotfl!!!

-=welcome=- to Linux…grit your teeth and shovel in lots of
patience…in the end you will wonder why it took you so long to switch!

ok, you wrote “With network manager not event the wireless LED is on but
as soon as I go into Network settings via YaST the LED” and generally
speaking if you are using Network Manager you should be getting a
warning if you try to fiddle with the network settings in YaST–they
both can’t be in control at the same time…

ok2: “hard blocked” (above) means that the hardware is blocking the
use of wi-fi, which generally means there is an Fn plus another button
combo which allows the hardware to turn on or off the wi-fi stuff
(sending radio signals from your laptop to the access point takes
battery power, and most manufacturers give you a switch to turn that off
when you don’t want your battery running down while NOT needed wi-fi,
see?) so, check your user manual and be sure to unblock, then:

ok3: “soft blocked” means your software is blocking this use of wi-fi,
here (and i hope there) i find a Network Manager icon in the “tray”
(but, i don’t know if you have a ‘tray’ because you have not declared
your desktop environment (and not all DEs have a tray)…and, if i left
click on that icon i see a place to switch the wi-fi from enable to
disable to enable . . .

with the hardware unblocked, then enable wi-fi and it will probably do
that…

usually i find not so good to have both wired and wi-fi enabled at the
same time…but, i guess in theory you should be able to have both
without either harm or problems…but, then why be sending out radio
signals if you wanna be wired in??

finally, pity is a service you have show proof that you have earned
it–so, next time we need some tears!!

again, welcome…now if that didn’t help i must plead ignorance to why
you have two!!:

Did you do

sudo /usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware

You may need to blacklist with

blacklist dell-wifi

added to
/etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf

Maybe Larry can confirm

On my Dell Inspiron laptop, when I ran into that I rebooted to windows and turned WiFi on in Windows with the FnF2 key combination. Then everything was fine, as long as I remembered not to turn it off.

I later discovered that FnF2 would have worked in opensuse also.

At least on my laptop, there’s a BIOS setting as to which devices are turned on/off by the FnF2 key combo.

Hello DD

After installation no drivers were found as per rfkill.
so I followed a link that showed me how to do this

“sudo /usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware”

After that rfkill showed dell-wifi and phy0

I hope this infomation helps

My laptop has a switch on the side for WAN and Blue-tooth turning it on and of does show the blue-tooth and phy0 going on and off but dell-wireless stays the same.
Using OpenSuse 12.2 Gnome 4.3.2

Is it working in windows

Yes it was working.

I’m not sure what your next step
I’d prefer it if @lwfinger were in on comments here
Personally I’d probably try blacklisting the dell-wifi, but I may be on the wrong track. Then again, it’s a minor thing to try and easy to undo.

Try this first

sudo /sbin/modprobe -rv b43
sudo /sbin/modprobe -v b43

insmod /lib/modules/3.4.6-2.10-desktop/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/pcmcia_core.ko
insmod /lib/modules/3.4.6-2.10-desktop/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/pcmcia.ko
insmod /lib/modules/3.4.6-2.10-desktop/kernel/drivers/ssb/ssb.ko
insmod /lib/modules/3.4.6-2.10-desktop/kernel/net/wireless/cfg80211.ko

Ok done Restarting, Restarting Laptop please wait…

Ok Here is an Update

I setup the wireless network via Ifup and the LED comes on and I can scan for SSID and it picks up me Networks.

But I cant use the connection (not even sure I am connected) :expressionless:

But if I use Network manager (knetwork manager applet) the Wireless LED goes off and shows “hardware disabled” and Airplane mode is ALWAYS on!>:(

Thats all I know…

How can I check if my wireless is connect with my AP?

see if you can find a smile hidden in these:
https://www.google.dk/search?q=site%3Aopensuse.org+“airplane+mode”

there may be a bug in there somewhere which needs to be pushed into
bugzilla.

There are several ways to check if a connection has been made. The first is to
check the output of the dmesg command to see the authentication and association
status. The second is the output of the /use/sbin/iwconfig command.

My opinion is that you had better concentrate on using NetworkManager. With
ifup, getting all the bits right is a real pain, and is seldom done correctly by
a beginner.

Earlier, it was suggested that you blacklist dell-wmi. Have you done that? Those
wmi routines are incomplete, and may not work correctly for all Dell models.

In the logging associated with the ‘modprobe -v b43’, I did not see the ‘insmod
…/b43.ko’ line. What happened?

OK Guys I’m not sure I understand what your trying to tell me…

What do you need me to do?

@lwfinger
Suggests you switch back to NetworkManager
And if I understand correctly you add:
blacklist dell-wmi to /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf

When I add this code to XTerm it tells me this:
input
cnf blacklist dell-wmi to /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf
output
blacklist: command not found

Did I use it right?:shame:
