kde startup time question

I have been running 11.4 updated to KDE 4.8.5 on a HP dv6-3210US laptop ( AMD phenom 3 Ghz dualcore), 5400 RPM drive, Radeon HD 4250.

From a cold boot, log in to KDE took 5-10 secs (subsequent KDE log in took < 5 secs).

With 12.2 on the same laptop, KDE takes 25 secs to log in first time after every boot. Subsequent log in takes 5 secs. I updated to 4.9.1 and same story.

I have disabled nepomuk and even akonadi. Disabled translucency and blur rest desktop effects same. In 11.4, I had catalyst fglrx drivers but in 12.2, the OSS radeon driver. I cannot get fglrx to run (12.6 legacy installs but only blank screen comes up).

Why the difference ? Does preload have something to do with it ? The boot times are about the same in both instances.

I can not directly answer your question, but you can investigate a bit
what takes so much time at startup with systemd-analyze (install it if
you do not already have it) and then run

systemd-analyze blame

I guess here that you use systemd which is the default on the 12.2 install.

I am concerned with KDE startup not system startup. Do you think systemd has anything to do with how slowly KDE starts up ?

The times I quoted are from the time KDM logon screen is presented.

Then what I suggested does not help you, I misunderstood the question,
sorry.

I have no clue if this is related to your problem, but when my internet connection isn’t working in 12.2, it takes about half a minute to get to my desktop from the KDM screen, though I don’t remember if subsequent logins are faster.

I don’t think that is the issue. In fact, after install, I always edit network scripts in /etc/sysconfig and change all TIMEOUT variables to 2 secs. In the past, that used to be an issue.

I am curious - when you ARE connected, what is your KDE startup time ( from KDM logon screen to usable KDE desktop) first time after a system reboot ?

I just did a reboot, and counting in my head (I can’t find a stopwatch) I got eight seconds.

Do you have a SSD or a regular drive ? Laptop or desktop ?

Desktop. 3.6Ghz Phenom II X3, 8GB RAM, Samsung 830 series 128GB SSD. I’m running the 64 bit version as well.
