Greetings all, I’m trying to run Second Life on the release 12.2 64bit of openSuse but it crashes as soon as the viewer window opens.
I tried with many viewers and all with the same result, the official viewer, phoenix, firestorm, singularity. The only one that currently works is a beta version of Kokua 64 bit but is in a too early development stage to be used. All the other viewers are 32 bit and they do require 32bit compatibility environment in order to run. I have installed several 32bit packages, including but it keeps crashing the same way. It always worked with any prior release of openSuse and now I cannot really understand what is missing or going wrong.
Does anybody have the same problem?
I have the same problem with OpenSuse 12.2, 32bit ! I tried several viewers, Firestorm, Phoenix and the origin one from LindenLabs and everywhere the same: the window pops up for a moment and then closes again. Im already using the nvidia driver (340.xx) and glxgears runs nicely with abotu 60fps.
The problem seems to be related to fontconfig, I was able to make it work copying the following libraries from Kouka Viewer 3.3.4 in the directory “lib” of Firestorm (or any other viewer that was not working":
libfontconfig.so
libfontconfig.so.1
libfontconfig.so.1.4.4
I have downloaded the “Kouka” viewer which seems to be identical to the Imprudence viewer, but i didnt found the files you mentioned. Just for fun i made a copy (yes, beat me now…i know that one shouldnt do that) of the existing “libfontconfig.so.1.4.4” from the Firestorm*/lib/ directory and renamed it into “libfontconfig.so.1” and another “libfontconfig.so”. And its working ! Slow, but working. I also tried for fun the other viewers, LindenLabs_3.3.4, Phoenix_1.6.1 and even Imprudence_1.3.2b: without the 3 files its not, with the 3 files IT IS working.
I can confirm this, if it’s due to the same issue as me. Both the official SL viewer and custom ones are crashing. Everyone says it’s because the latest libfontcfg is broken and needs to be downgraded, by replacing the lib in the Secondlife/lib/ folder IIRC. I tried that and it didn’t help me much, though I might have been doing it wrong myself. If anyone knows I’m very curious for a fix as well.
I’m still very interested in this as well… any news? Last time I was told to update libfontconfig, which I did in the SecondLife/lib/ folder, but it didn’t change anything. I’m trying to run FireStorm since the official SL viewer shoved OpenSim support, and this is the log I get with the firestorm launch script (not sure if it’s due to the same issue as op’s):
@MirceaKitsune: Nono… not changing the libfontconfig in the secondlife folder, but in the folder of the viewer ! Normally that would be something like /home/yournamehere/bin/Phoenix_Firestorm-Release_i686_4.2.2.29837/lib/
Yes, I think that’s where I changed it. I got the archive of the viewer, unpacked it, and updated the libs there. In my case I unpacked it in my Documents folder (for now) so the path is /home/mircea/Documents/Phoenix_Firestorm-Release_i686_4.2.2.29837/lib/ Yet it sill won’t work. The files I updated are libfontconfig.so.1 and libfontconfig.so.1.4.4
It seems the obvious solution is to just compile the viewer from source. But since it uses the proprietary Vivox for the voice chat I don’t really see the point in creating a RPM package.
IIRC Snowglobe is a dead project (the repo has that in its URL, not sure if there are other viewers there). I tried with the official SL viewer and Firestorm, both crash. Still curious as to why, since again I updated the libfontconfig libraries in the SL viewer’s folder…
Tried the latest version from their downloads page, both with the included libs and updated libfontconfig from the archive I used last time. Still crashes for me. Are you talking about a nightly / development build? If so I’ll wait until the latest release version… if not why does it still not start here?
