Default oS12.2, kde4, Google Chrome and magnet links...

    Hi,

I did a fresh 12.2_x64 install, then I installed my preferred browser - Google Chrome - and I was pleased that the new openSUSE worked even better than I hoped for.
First and so far the only problem I can't find a solution to is using 'magnet links' with Google Chrome. I pretty much tried everything I can think of. but it isn't any problem with (what I initially thought) xdg-open because if one copy the link and use it with xdg-open in a terminal it work as it should, (opening my preferred torrent-client).
Magnet links also works as they should in Firefox but I don't think Firefox depend on xdg-open in order to chose what program to open links with.

    what I tried:

    1. Adding/removing 'magnet' to the '~/.config/google-chrome/Local State' file. (in the protocol handler part )
    2. adding a 'magnet.protocol' file to '~/.kde4/share/kde4/services/'
    3. patch 'xdg-open'

nr. 3 was in fact totally redundant because 'xdg-open' works as it should by default...

It would be nice if someone could point me in a new direction since I'm out of ideas... I do think it has something to do with kde but what do I know xD

    peace Lars

btw, same version of Google Chrome works as it should in a fresh oS12.1 install... and it works on 12.2 in other desktop environments other than kde.

    Hi,
thx for the input openSUSE babes, It made it less complicated to understand why an opensource Linux dist would try to prevent kopmi...
openSUSE... I used it for over 10 years, well. since the Novell Suse days...(first Suse was 8.x, **** loads of years ago...)
Think I have to find a new Linux dist... since this one feels like it is controlled by money...

is that a threat to leave if you don't get help? unbelievable!

    i can see (here:
    http://forums.opensuse.org/english/g.../applications/) that
as of this time there have been 53 views of your post....now, i can't
speak for the other potential helpers here who also read your post
within the first few hours, but personally i had never heard of a
    "magnet link" before.....never!

so, would you have been happy to stay around if the _other_ 40-something
who also had NO idea what you were asking about, wrote that to you??

so, i googled "magic link" and learn it has something to do with a
torrent--so, here is my answer: if Chrome doesn't handle a "magic link"
the way FF does, write a bug to bugzilla..

and use FF or a torrent client until the bug is resolved.

or, just pout and punish us by switching distros (because all the
un-paid, volunteer helpers here are "controlled by money")!

oh no, i'm afraid you will go away... (i'm shaking with FEAR)

    Well, sry...

I had no way of removing my comment after I hastily posted it... not intended for it to sound so moronic, so sorry again for that.

chromium seems to handle magnet links ok - so you could try that instead of chrome.

_that_ is the factiod of the day!

one of my famous rules: Use what works.

(if Chrome does not and FF does--buy a copy, it does not cost that much
extra and use it! anyway, maybe chrome gets fixed and works next
week--but, that _might_ depend on YOU to log the bug, begin here:

Not all magnet links are used for evil things...
    an example;
    slackware-12.2-dvd-iso (download torrent) - TPB

i didn't accuse you of such.

i know that torrents and magic links can be used for good things: like,
i use a torrent to fetch new releases of openSUSE...and, i have only
    ever used them for such.
