desktop icons

Have opensuse 12.2 ,gnome desktop. Opened file system and went to /usr/share/applications and right clicked an icon (Firefox) and was not able to copy and paste it to desktop. It was grayed out. Only thing I could do was copy to home folder which I also can’t get on the desktop. Thanks for the help.

GNOME3 doesn’t support desktop icons unless you’re running in fallback
mode. You might want to look at the GNOME website to see what’s new in
GNOME3, as it’s very different from GNOME2.

Sure it does… and not in fallback mode;

You can either link to the desktop files or copy them to ~/Desktop. You
do need to fire up nautilus to kick it into life. You also need to
start and ‘trust’ from the application for the icon to appear.

Interesting, I had tried this on 12.1 but it didn’t work for me unless I
was in fallback mode.

Thanks guys. Got a few icons on desktop courtesy of Advanced settings. Still would like to put a few more there. Opened nautilus and tried to copy icons to ~Desktop but notsure how to do this. Have Gnome 3 and Opensuse 12.2 Can you point me to where I can find info on this. Really only want to add 3 or 4 icons to desktop like skype, dictionary, terminal. Thanks.

Just open a terminal and copy as required, for example;


cp /usr/share/applications/skype.desktop ~/Desktop

They probably need to be started (no icon) and selected as trusted.

Followed above and cp /usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop ~Desktop and that worked. Hope I can do same for a Terminal icon and others. Thanks.

Thanks guys. Got all the icons I wanted on the desktop. Question: Why is it necessary to jump through hoops to do this. Couldn’t it be set up so that we could just drag and drop the icons from /usr/share/applications? Would be easier and a lot less confusing for a newbie. Thanks again.

A design decision by the GNOME folks AFAIK… You should be able to,
they just need to be copied to ~/Desktop
