Thread: Have I enabled too many repos?

  1. #1

Default Have I enabled too many repos?

Sorry for newbie question but I just about have everything else up & running ok including ALL codecs etc. but I need to ask why I got so many apps that I didn't request, installed when I first enabled what I thought are the main essential repos & did the 1st main update after install. I got stuff like open office extras, kopete, Marble, GIMP (which I didn't want) and quite a few other programs that I have had to go through uninstalling one by one. Whats the difference between the "Main OSS & Main Non OSS" and the "openSUSE-Oss & openSUSE-Non-Oss" ?? are they somehow duplicates? and have I made a typical newbie to openSUSE error of enabling too many repos (re the libdvdcss, yes I do want to occasionally rip dvds with handbrake or whatever, so need the decryption).

My final question is about "apper" it came up right after fresh install but didn't go and get the updates even after I authenticated, so I had to open up YaST which is when I got quite a lot of unexpected apps. So does apper work properly for people or should i just stick to YaST/Zypper for updates?

I have the following repos enabled

    openSUSE-12.2-Update-Non-Oss
    openSUSE-12.2-Update

    openSUSE-12.2-Oss
    openSUSE-12.2-Non-Oss

    Packman
    libdvdcss
    Main Update Repository
    Main Repository (OSS)
    Main Repository (NON-OSS)
    openSUSE BuildService - KDE:Extra

It looks to me like these are duplicates of each other.
Check the url that each of them point at.

Please allways post computer text between CODE tags: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/i...ags-guide.html
And include the prompt, the command and the output including the next prompt. Thus we can see where yoou were, what you did and what you got.

In this case you should show:
    Code:
    zypper lr -d

    They are the same
They may have been added by you running a Oneclclick for multimedia

I didn't do the OneClick, I did however do the following for getting codecs & restricted formats

    Code:
zypper in libdvdcss2 vlc libxine1-codecs k3b-codecs ffmpeg lame
    gstreamer-0_10-ffmpeg gstreamer-0_10-plugins-bad gstreamer-0_10-plugins-ugly
    gstreamer-0_10-plugins-ugly-orig-addon w32codec-all MPlayer smplayer
    gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good libxine1 libdvdplay0 libdvdread4 libdvdnav4 xine-ui
    libmad0 ffmpeg sox libxvidcore4 xvidcore libavcodec52 libavdevice52 libvlccore4
    libvlc5 lsb pullin-flash-player flash-player gstreamer-0_10-ffmpeg
    gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mp3 gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mpegdemux
    gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mpegmux gstreamer-0_10-plugins-base
    gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good-extra k3b vlc-aout-pulse libquicktime0
    gstreamer-0_10-plugins-bad-orig-addon gecko-mediaplayer
I can easily disable the duplicate repos, no problem but what I'm really wondering about here is what pulled in apps such as Gimp, Marble and some other stuff which I did not request and I'm fairly sure apps like these would have been too large for a basic live CD install (understandable if dvd but not CD). In fact I didn't actually request VLC itself but I am guessing that by pulling in the above codecs & dependencies, VLC would have been pulled in, I can also only guess that by doing the 1st main update after fresh install + after enabling the repos, suse pulled in a selection of apps it might normally include in a DVD install, or whatever?

    Is fine

The code you used for the kde multimedia includes vlc in there
Gimp is part of the default install
    Leap 15.1_KDE

Yes, you did. It is in the "zypper in" list you posted, in the first line.

Mine came like that when I did a clean install of 12.2

    zypper lr -d
