    Default KDE Login screen keeps getting changed

    Greetings All,

    I have set up my login screen to display a background picture of my choosing.
    About once or twice a month, an update gets installed that resets my login background to "stripes.png", and I get to run the login screen setup all over again.

    I've tried changing permissions on /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/backgroundrc to read-only, but whatever is changing it turns it back to a writable file.

    This is NOT a major problem, but it IS a bit annoying.

    Does anyone have any idea on how I can keep my background, or should I resign myself to "stripes"?

    I'm running SUSE 12.1 32 bit, with KDE v 4.8.5.

    Thanx in advance.

    You might try locking the version of kdm or its branding so it does not get updated. Obviously if there are any security issues you might want to manually update at a time of your choosing.

    I use a script to overwrite settings post update, cp /backup/rc /usr/where/ever/it/is/rc
    Also got rm /usr/share/autostart/*nepomuk* and a couple of other rm lines in this script.
    So every time there's kde update, I just run this randomscript.sh and it's done.

    What you're experiencing is what I call a "KDE Kwork" that's not official that's me.
    If that picture is in /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/" does your choice picture stay in that folder post update?
    If it does for now let's call it MyPic
    If you haven't already try this:
    1.Open Yast>etc/sysconfig Editor
    2.In the left pane expand Desktop find display manager>DISPLAYMANGER_KDM_THEME
    3. To the right there'll be a box which will have "stripes" in it if you left it that way from the last update
    4. Just delete the "stripes" & type in MyPic click OK
    This won't fix the KDEKwork but going through Yast will be easier than going through that whole process.

    Almost ...
    Except that it should be "MyTheme" rather that "MyPic". The name you put here is the name of a subdirectory of /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes that contains a .xml file with the same name (usually) and pictures, among other files. The default is SUSE.

    Here's an example:

    Code:
    $ grep DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager
    DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME="niglo-openSUSE"

    $ find -L /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/niglo-openSUSE -type f
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/niglo-openSUSE/background-1920x1200.jpg
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/niglo-openSUSE/logo.svg
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/niglo-openSUSE/rectangle.png
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/niglo-openSUSE/user_icon.png
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/niglo-openSUSE/lock.png
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/niglo-openSUSE/niglo-openSUSE.xml
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/niglo-openSUSE/session_normal.png
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/niglo-openSUSE/background-1920x1080.jpg
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/niglo-openSUSE/KdmGreeterTheme.desktop
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/niglo-openSUSE/lineedit_normal.png
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/niglo-openSUSE/background-1280x1024.jpg
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/niglo-openSUSE/system_normal.png
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/niglo-openSUSE/background-1600x1200.jpg
    And the themes shipped with kdm (black/blue) and kdm-branding-openSUSE (black/green):
    Code:
    $ find /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/*/ -name "*.xml"
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/circles/circles.xml
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/horos/horos.xml
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/niglo-openSUSE/niglo-openSUSE.xml
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/oxygen/oxygen.xml
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/oxygen-air/oxygen-air.xml
    /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/SUSE/openSUSE.xml

    Rename stripes and rename your file to stripes?
