Default After start screen turns black

Hi, on my laptop I'm using openSuse 11.4 for a while now and it worked fine. This day while watching a video the screen turned black (backlight still on). The screen still works because during boot everything is shown but after the wait animation is over and the desktop should show it goes black. When using show=verbose it runs through the whole process and turns black after that instead of showing the desktop. nomodeset also does not work
Any ideas what I could do?

Btw; support for 11.4 will end soon I think; is there a way to get the new version but keep gnome2?

Turns it black before or after you log in?

The user account automatically logs in.
I see the 'mouse', this clock-like circle animation, for a fraction of a second and after that it turns dark.
