Yes, but not with regular updates; with a zypper dup.

I always recommend downloading the final version - just in case you need to reinstall or your root partition gets corrupted or drive goes and so on.... :-)

I usually start with the MS 4 or 5 version of a new release, and do a clean
install of / on an available partition. In the case of 12.2, it was the one with
11.4 on it. From then on, it is mostly "zypper up" except for the time the repos
change from Factory to the regular ones - then dup is needed. I download the
Live CD when the version is released to put on the shelf, but it is never used
to install the final version. I never download or use the DVD due to the
    bandwidth needed.

Note that "zypper dup" will change vendors (aka repo), but "zypper up" does not.
To me, that means that an upgrade from 12.2 RC2 to 12.2 final will not need to
use "dup", but an upgrade from 12.1 to 12.2 will. When in doubt, one can always
let "zypper up" complete, then run "zypper dup", and look at the suggested
    updates with a critical eye.

Try. It will tell you the estimated size. It is impossible to say in advance, it depends on
what the devs will change, and in what you have installed.

If you have already installed RC2 and done things with it, why destroy it? It is up to you.
