That's almost always wrong, you removed the x bit which makes it
    impossible to open a directory.
Change it to 755 (that's still not clean since for plain files you want
most probably 644 and 755 only for directories)

Sorry, I seem to have missed the find output you duly posted

When I filter out all the Warnings, I see three answers:
    Code:
    /home/bilbo/public_html/cruisinginterface
    /srv/www/htdocs/cruisinginterface
    /svr/www/htdocs/cruisinginterface
The last one is certainly the result of some typo by you!!!!!! Please
    1) look inside that /svr and /svr/www and /svr/www.htdocs what is there.
    2) When it are only (old) copies of things you have, then please delete /svr completely. It is making all our work difficult.
    3) try to think where you could have possibly made als that typing error of /svr instead of /srv, check all you configurations involved in this.

    UPDATE

Somehow the permissions on /home.pubic_html were changed by the system so that firefox could not read it - I change the permissions back to 766 and all is well again.

yes, that typo is mine, I did it when I was trying to copy my projects into the htdocs dir - should I delete that directory?

Yes, of course. One should allway remedy errors one made. How big a mess will it be on your system when you do not keep everything tidy and logical. You are the system manager. Please manage!

do not tell stories, but show computer facts!
When I want to tell what the permission are I will show:
    Code:
    marian@boven:~> ls -la public_html/
    total 12
    drwxr-xr-x 2 marian wij 4096 Oct 1 2007 .
    drwxr-xr-x 34 marian wij 4096 Jul 24 15:47 ..
    -rw-r--r-- 1 marian wij 48 Oct 1 2007 .directory
    marian@boven:~>
Or, when I want to show the directorly itself only:
    Code:
    marian@boven:~> ls -ld public_html/
    drwxr-xr-x 2 marian wij 4096 Oct 1 2007 public_html/
    marian@boven:~>
BTW, both show that the access bits are 755, which is the creation default as this user never used it or did anything to it.

And it would also keep you from makiing typos like /home.pubic_html .
